"The ring-tailed glider is considered sacred by some Vogelkop clans, who believe it is a manifestation of ancestorsβ spirits. Rika Korain, a local Maybrat woman and a research co-author, says the species could not have been identified without the help of traditional owners."
I always like seeing news like this - though really just discovered for western science. Reading the article, it sounds like people living there knew about them. But still some good news! And I'm glad the article credited the local people's role in this.π

They will thank you for your service because that is all they want from you: your service to them. Once that usefulness has endedβ¦
Star Trek has always been about exploring the human condition while also having some fun, thought provoking, and weird sci-fi concepts.
Getting tired of media illiterate chuds and fake fans trying to convince you it was only about the cool spaceships.
Results: Progressives win all four of these primaries, ousting incumbents Cunningham, Willingham, and Majeed, while Pierce held off Wrayβs comeback.

Two fish traps floating on a river. There are walkways around 3 sides. The downstream side doesn't have a walkway. The traps are in the middle. Captures roughly 15% of the population moving through at a given moment. Checked daily and fish measured and counted and some other data collected.
Looking at the small salmon fry in one of the traps. There are a lot of small salmon fry in the trap.
A close up of a few of the salmon fry that were caught. All of them were ultimately returned to the river.
I went out to a fish trap for work today. Really interesting. Being used to study Chinook salmon runs and the differences between fall and spring Chinook and how we can better support them through restoration projects. π° π
Crafting a version of reality in which right-wing college students are being persecuted for their strongly held beliefs not only legitimizes the firing of so-called liberal professors, but makes these actions necessary to save students from systemic harassment at the hands of a powerful institution.
The peace president. No president in the modern era has ordered more military strikes against as many different countries as Donald Trump. He's attacked 7 nations, 3 of which had never been targeted by US military strikes. He authorized more individual air strikes in 2025 than Biden did in 4 years.
Under a new policy released Thursday, the Trump Administration will test conversion therapy on trans people in prisons. It explicitly states that it aims to help trans people βrecover,β all the while forcibly detransitioning them both medically and socially.

Rising ocean temps blamed for massive die-off of marine life. "Researchers examined the year-to-year change of 33,000 [fish] populations in the northern hemisphere.... They found the drop in biomass from chronic heating to be as high as 19.8% in a single year." www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Whether you agree with the military operations on Ghorman or not, you need to respect our men and women in white who are making sacrifices for the Empire.

Billionaires should not exist.
Nope. We don't have to do this. The courageous act would be to refuse. Jingoist slop like this is an enormous factor in why the US has been terrorizing the world for decades. There are no heroes bombing Iran.
world-altering decisions are being made by a cabal of gambling addicts hell bent on self enrichment no matter the cost to humanity, we should look into that.
Each one of those three missiles costs 33% more than the annual budget of the national park where I work.
I'm a white straight guy, and I'm loving Starfleet Academy. Great show and the writers seem to really get Star Trek. I try to embrace the idea of infinite diversity in infinite combinations in my daily life. Makes for a much richer and better world to live in. Can't wait for more episodes!
It would have been so cool to have Starfleet Academy airing at the same time as Lower Decks and Discovery.
Sheβs a serious candidate; at this point I think most people dismissing her seriousness are at least partially motivated by misogyny; and this is a clearer articulation of a progressive foreign policy than Iβve seen anyone else running for office make
These people want to be celebrated and held up by the rest of us. They want to be viewed as the people who see the future and make it happen. They want us to believe the economy only works because of them. In reality, what we have comes from all of us--in spite of the efforts of these people.
Trump, Ellon, Peter Thiel, and many others all view themselves as creators. And in our capitalist society, we tend to call these people "job creators", "entrepreneurs", etc. Pundits, journalists and politicians often celebrate these types of people. Calling them the Destroyer Class counters that.
@hcrichardson.bsky.social / @jbf1755.bsky.social - How about the "Destroyer Class" as a name for the people destroying our democracy, jobs, lives, and the planet?
If war is needed (it isn't) then Congress should vote to declare it. There was no vote. This attack on Iran is immoral and illegal and elected officials like this guy are complicit in it.
Dozens of U.S. strikes on Iran. Dunno what to say now other than my thoughts are with the Iranian civilians under fire. What a nightmare.
The late-season Western Monarch Count gives us a look at how many butterflies made it through the winter. The percent of remaining monarchs was typical, but coming from the 3rd lowest mid-season count on record, we hope these monarchs will have a good breeding season.

A model of the Protostar with the Dauntless and Voyager A behind it. Some of my other Star Trek models are off behind them.
A shifted view showing the Dauntless and Voyager A a bit more. The models aren't to scale with each other. The Protostar is the biggest of the three despite being a lot smaller in the show.
Got my USS Protostar NX-76884 today! It joins my little Star Trek Prodigy fleet--the USS Voyager A and the USS Dauntless. The Dauntless is the version shown in Prodigy, not the one shown in Voyager. The designs are a bit different.
A bright yellow daffodil bloom.
These haven't bloomed yet, but will soon! The flower buds are up and some are starting to show some yellow. Lots of green leaves below them that look a bit like smooth thick grass stalks.
First daffodil bloom of the season at my place. Can't wait for more spring sunshine! π±
News article that says βPete Hegseth declares that Scouting America (the org formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America) will eliminate transgender tolerance and diversity programsβ
As a proud transgender Eagle Scout, Pete Hegseth can go fuck himself. Also, heβs wrong about this and he can fuck himself for that too.
