Peptides, wellness and woo: A linguistic analysis My recent blog posts have mainly dealt with topics focusing on AI and metaphors; but for a while now I wanted to get back to writing something about biology, a field which has fascinated me for a l…

Really fascinating linguistic post on peptides and the wellness industry that makes reference to our paper on TikTok and ED content in relation to a metaphor I'm fascinated by at the moment: 'down the rabbit hole'.

Not just an experiment, but one apparently so badly documented and evaluated that it might not qualify for the title! We don't seem to have got much useful information from it, but it certainly provides a lot of thinking material

I personally don't think he's ever not been part of the establishment, nor that it's a bad thing to challenge people who are. But to me the interview as written didn't read like an honest challenge. Sorry, this isn't my thread and I'm not here to expound an opinion, just to add my little data point

my impression was she was trying very hard to make him look bad while not communicating to me why. It seemed she was refusing to speak his language or get the joke, which again could be justified but I didn’t see the justification, so it seemed mean. Could be the editor, not the journo, of course

Yes, also glad it’s not just me. I don’t know why she dislikes him so much, and I fully appreciate it could be fully justified, but the idea that it’s an outstanding piece of writing just doesn’t fit the experience I had reading it

Chain bookstores stop hyping celeb memoirs that die on their arses & shelving all the myriad genres of Nonfiction as THOUGHT, while only tabling identikit thinky thunky books by white guys challenge & THEN we'll talk nonfiction sales. Indie nonfiction is doing just GRAND.

I started with Plover but I didn’t study theory very rigorously and have added a bunch of stuff from other places as I’ve found put what I missed. I used the Platinum videos to begin and am now trying to speed-build

I think Iβ€˜ve heard that there’s a preferred style where you write β€œNovember 12” no matter how it’s pronounced. I’d have got that from US study materials. But because I’m not trying to work in the US I haven’t paid enough attention to US style to be confident

I think because the style is to transcribe it November 12 and she’s trying to be helpful? I don’t know though, I’m British!

solving a quadratic equation is fun
doing algebra in general is fun
working with surds and remembering "oh yeahhh, I can treat the number 5 as root5 x root5 and solve this" is fun

it is the same fun as logic puzzles and sudoku. if you like that, you would like this.

So much of the media and technological environment is designed to make us powerless. We're not even tenants and employees anymore, increasingly we are pressed into becoming user-subscribers to techno-informational systems that yield control of what we are able to think and imagine if we let them.
