Campaigners outside SSE's offices in Glasgow holding a banner which reads: "Stop Berwick Bank"

Today we gathered outside SSE's Glasgow office to urge them to stop the Berwick Bank offshore wind farm.

Together we delivered a petition signed by 12,500 people opposing this damaging project.

Scotland is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.

Developments can – and must – be a part of the solution to turn things around.

A blue tile with a blue and green chevron banner along the top. The words are a quote and read: "The climate and nature crisis demands urgent action. Fortunately, nature offers many solutions. Restoring Scotland’s peatlands and planting trees have a vital role to play in tackling climate change by locking away carbon. But this new report shows the Scottish Government’s current plans don’t match the level of ambition needed to reach Net Zero by 2045. Especially when it comes to supporting the reduction of greenhouse emissions from agriculture. The next Scottish Government must develop a clearer and more joined up plan; one that makes the most of nature-based solutions. The next Land Use Strategy must set out the changes needed to reduce emissions. And, the upcoming Rural Support Plan must provide better support for farmers and crofters to produce food while taking action for climate and nature. If we get this right, we can grow a greener, healthier and more secure future for Scotland for generations to come."

Today’s report from the Climate Change Committee backs up what we’ve been saying to the Scottish Government.

The Climate Change Plan is not good enough. Scotland needs bolder action to reach our climate targets.

Encouraging news for one of our rarest birds 🎉

RSPB Abernethy has recorded 30 lekking male Capercaillie in 2025 – a 50% increase in five years.

There is still a long way to go, but through innovative habitat management and collaboration this threatened species could have a brighter future 💪

Gulls are in serious trouble in Scotland.

These remarkable birds are facing significant pressures. A recent report revealed licensed control could have contributed to declines ➡️ rspb.org.uk/scotland/news/licensed-gull-control-in-scotland

We must balance the needs of protected species and people.

Text that states:

“Including the proposed Berwick Bank offshore windfarm in the Contracts for Difference scheme is a crushing blow for marine wildlife in Scotland and beyond. When 62% of seabird species are in decline across the UK, it is an absolute disgrace that public money will be used to support what is predicted to be one of the world’s most damaging windfarms for birds.

"A development that will kill will tens of thousands of seabirds over its lifetime and push species like Kittiwakes and Puffins closer to extinction in Scotland is unsupportable on every level.

"What’s more, measures needed to try and compensate for the impact of Berwick Bank would need to be so great this one windfarm could effectively block the progress of other less harmful projects.

The UK Government’s decision to include Berwick Bank in the Contracts for Difference scheme is a disaster for Scotland’s seabirds.

Killing tens of thousands of these incredible birds isn’t just reckless, it could push many species towards extinction.

Pitting Nimbys against Yimbys is a bad idea Popular political assumptions misread the public by attacking nature as the block to building more housing

Tl:dr - We obviously need to build more (tho public need convincing that will lower prices) but pitting housing vs nature is surest way to erode support for housing. Instead a focus on protecting nature and integrating green spaces likely to go down better. www.ft.com/content/f456...

A bright blue tile with an RSPB Scotland logo and a quote saying “We are delighted at the closure of a loophole in legislation that governs grouse shooting.

During scrutiny of the Natural Environment Bill, the Rural Affairs and Islands Committee gave decisive support to a Scottish Government amendment.

If the amended legislation is supported by the wider Parliament next year, it will restore the meaningful deterrent to the illegal killing of birds of prey that was originally intended by the Scottish Parliament in their passing of the Wildlife Management and Muirburn Act.

It will now recognise that, in some cases, a wildlife crime offence which happens away from a licenced area may “support or benefit the activities permitted by the licence” – that is grouse shoot management – as well as allowing consideration of “relevant offences”.

NatureScot could then consider such offenses with respect to the suspension or revocation of a grouse shooting licence.”

The Natural Environment Bill: is it a trick or a treat for nature?

Yesterday MSPs debated the Bill in Parliament. It was great to hear so many MSPs talking passionately about nature and supporting the introduction of ambitious, legally-binding nature restoration targets.

These targets are key. They could help us move beyond simply minimising damage to nature to actually reversing the decline of species and habitats across Scotland.

But there’s a big problem. Part 2 of the Bill threatens to weaken our most important wildlife protections. There should be no place for this in a Bill that aims to restore nature.

The Natural Environment Bill is a once-in-a-generation chance to turn things around for Scotland’s nature, but we must get the detail right.
