Drilling more North Sea oil and gas won't drive down UK energy prices, says fact sheet put out by the UK government on the impact of Iran war
Interestingly, it's quite similar to the one the then Tory-led govt put out in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine
(FT) - Qatar’s energy minister has warned that war in the Middle East could “bring down the economies of the world”, predicting that all Gulf energy exporters would shut down production within weeks and drive oil to $150 a barrel.

NEW: After Gorton & Denton, how should we understand the threat to Labour's left?
Big new @persuasionuk.bsky.social report out with @38degrees.bsky.social on 'progressive defectors' - Lab 2024 switchers to Greens, Plaid, SNP, Lib Dems.
Who are they, who are they not & what's moving them? 🧵
These headlines should always read “New secondary moderns set to return”, since that’s where most kids will go under that system.

A German court has ruled that it is legal to state that the man who runs the Müller (Rice) empire is a supporter of the far-right AfD. Müller repeatedly denied it, which says everything about how bad he knew that association could be for his business. I hope the boycotts intensify.
"UK must double down on renewables as wars drive up energy costs, experts say"
Meanwhile, the non-experts in Reform and the Tories would have us hooked to expensive fossil fuels for decades more. Don't vote for these idiots.

This is such a cool project from TfL, which will link solar arrays directly to the Tube network. Projects like this also look more attractive every time gas prices spike (which they tend to do a lot given *gestures at everything*). www.businessgreen.com/news/4526530...
Whole new meaning of this cartoon just dropped
The UK Oil and Gas industry knows the North Sea is in terminal decline. And they even say so. So always call BS on those who suggest otherwise. It has been in terminal decline since before any climate legislation. Details on LI.

All I can think about is Jeff Bezos saying that he slashed jobs at the Washington Post — including those of foreign correspondents in the Middle East — based on "the data," and a few weeks later a whole war breaks out in the Middle East that these laid off folks would have covered as true experts.
New forecast: Over the next 4 years, the Treasury will be transferring £18 billion per year to reimburse the Bank of England for its losses from QE. Down slightly but still huge. Neither the ECB nor the Fed do this. Undoing this could free up £5bn per year for the rest of this parliament.
Are you kidding me? Fuel Duty rates have bene held steady for 16 years while costs for public transport and general ethical choices have soared.
Raising fuel duty is one of a very short list of things that this government is getting right. Very poor from the Lib Dems.
Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez: “Today more than ever, it is essential to remember that one can be against a hateful regime as is the case with the Iranian regime…and at the same time be against an unjustified, dangerous military intervention outside of international law.”
Polanski retweeting a post from the account saying "We're suing you" (i.e. Labour) today just adds to how unedifying this all is.
Speaking as a Green member, I think it's high-time we shift the primacy of the party's social media comms away from Polanski's own feed, which is getting embarrassing.
Oh go on then. @tacticalchoice_ on X is - at best - a parody account. Its web address was registered today and points to the Green Party’s website. And yet its tweet claiming to have been copied for the Labour leaflet has been viewed 200k times, screenshotted countless more

so you've probably heard about the London measles outbreak. A lot of people are talking about anti-vax misinformation, but that's not actually the problem here. The problem is austerity. 🧵

The data centres needed to power the UK's artificial intelligence revolution would use more electricity than the entire country consumes at its peak.
MPs called for a “national conversation” about data centres, including putting climate change targets at risk.

Sometimes you wonder. Bloomberg this morning saying that you can't both believe that AI is a big deal and that we're in a bubble. But you absolutely can! That's exactly the story of the tech bubble of the 90s, major economic impact but not big profits. Sigh.

Harsh, but…
It’s time for fairer parking charges for oversized vehicles and stricter safety standards. We shouldn't be importing US-style road danger to the UK. 🛑🇬🇧
