Understanding the Different Types of Seizures Seizures are divided into two general categories. Focal seizures which occur when there is abnoral activity in a single brain region, are categorized Into two sub-types: Focal aware seizures: May cause mood changes and involuntary movements. Common symptoms include alterations to sense of taste, smell, sight, hearing, or touch, dizziness, tingling, and twitching of limbs. Focal impaired awareness seizures: Differentiated from the above type by loss of awareness during the seizure and disorientation afterward. Symptoms are unresponsiveness, and performing repettive movements. Generalized seizures which occur when there is abnormal activity throughout the entire brain, are categorized into six sub-types: Absence seizures: Most common in children. Symptoms include vacant stares as well as small, subtle body movements like blinking or smacking the lips. Tonic seizures: Result in stiffening of your muscles, especially in your back and limbs. May cause you to collapse or fall. Atonic seizures: Affect the muscles, and similarly to tonic seizures, cause Ioss of control. Again, often results in falls. Clonic seizures: Cause jerking muscle contractions, typically seen in the limbs as well as the face and neck. Myoclonic seizures: Cause rapic jerks or twitches of the limbs. Tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal seizures): The most serious type of seizure. Cause sudden unconsciousness. Other symptoms include stiffening of the body, shaking, loss of bowel or bladder control, and biting of the tongue.
