But also, sometimes drastic change, when story supported, can actually feel fun and appropriate.
Hell, you could even introduce a faction that also thinks Bob sucks, and can replace them as their new god/patron.
I think that looking at this change as binary is the problem. Find ways to enter the deity/patron’s influence on that character and the things they care about. Curse the character. Hit them in the roleplay long before you remove the mechanics.
