The "invincible" meme asks "how do I graph imaginary X-intercepts?" The response is "That's the neat part, you don't!" To the side, the graph of a parabola without real x intercepts is shown, along with a worked out solution of the quadratic formula showing complex answers.
My students asked so much, I had to make a meme.
"Taylor's theorem" is an excellent name. I didn't understand it at first and then I studied the picture a little more. It's really perfect.
A multimeter shows 304 kilo-ohms of resistance across a centimeter of heavy pencil doodling on a math test
Trolling one of my students later. When I return their test I will show them just how much graphite they doodled on it
Proud papa here: today my two youngest kids (11 & 12) went into our local convenience store by themselves to purchase something. They each went individually at different times. I said I had $10 for them to buy anything they wanted as long as they did it themselves while I waited outside.
Reposting this for today.
I knew this guy in high school. I'm not surprised he became a musician (he was really talented) but being on the soccer team with him did not prepare me for this surprise. He's running 100 miles for veterans. Watch if you please, donate if you like:

With reference to an outmoded mnemonic, the trig ratios for sine, cosine, and tangent are remembered as nearly making the name of the Star Wars character ahsoka tano.
Is this an acceptable alternative?
My first-day lesson in algebra 2 compares math (as a language) to the grammar of natural spoken languages. I don't know if this is exactly the right thing or exactly the wrong thing, but it's what I thought of when I read your post ๐

Apostasy now
Feeling unsure about my appearance, I asked my wife jokingly "is this the most unattractive I've ever been?"
She said no, and immediately I realized it didn't make me feel any better at all
Hours later, I'm still happy every time I remember it
It's also worth noting that the sword has two edges. There are lots of things that are difficult for me, which I think has something to do with having the kind of brain that makes me a good math teacher. ๐คท Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side
I think people have the same attitude toward people with artistic or musical ability, and they don't see the countless hours spent practicing. I do think I have some proclivities that make doing math rewarding to me, which motivates my practice.
Reading what I just wrote, it looks like I'm trying to imply you're not smart. Oops! Not what I'm trying to do. I'm sure you're very smart. I am thinking of how people (especially students) judge their self-worth by their grades, often in math, as a proxy for their intelligence. Can be unhealthy.
When people say that to me (or when people are dealing with their own difficulty with math) I tell them that there is a difference between "being smart" and "being good at math." For some reason, that one branch of intelligence is on a pedestal, which I believe is to everyone's detriment
I have seldom been so happy as when I saw this notification. A new science video from Dianna the Physics Girl!

Has anyone else ever pressed the "skip ad" button with their nose because their hands were messy? Asking from the kitchen
It was also the same number of marbles! Their estimates decreased as the dimension went up.
With this, I figure the empty space is more important to my intuition than the higher density of points.
Amazing...my gut feeling was that the top graph contained the fewest points, and the bottom graph contained the most.
It reminds me of an experiment I did where I asked students to estimate the number of marbles in three arrangements - lined up, spread out flat, and in a jar. (1D, 2D, and 3D)
Is there an equal number of points in each graph?
It hit me when my kids started pointing out when they saw pride flags and were happy to see them. I grew up in a world without them and was used to their absence.
Brilliant solution
A chart that shows viewership for the late show with Stephen Colbert is up 7%. The chart has no vertical axis and the apparent difference is disproportionately large
I love Colbert, but this chart made me think immediately of @graphcrimes.bsky.social
Exactly. What is a 21-sided polygon called? What is the prefix for 10^18? I have no need for that to take up room in my brain
In Star Trek after they vaporize someone with a phaser, what does the room smell like
Nah, it ended -eul
I had a dream last night that made up a French curse word. I believe it was spelled "feuiteulle" and meant something like getting f'd up as in a nasty brawl
I don't like dealing with significant digits or rounding in non-decimal number systems. But they exist and we should be able to deal with them
