lol yeah, my paper was specifically about Samus Aran and how the weird erasure of her in academia is in line with mainstream culture only valuing certain portrayals of women

TRULY. We all make mistakes! You can never be perfect with your info, but it's worth putting in the grease to double and triple check stuff.

I think the idea was that I wasn't supposed to critique other researchers because academia is small and they'll find out. But I'm like, then they should have fact checked a little better?

(for context, when I was in grad school, most of the people who had published games-study work weren't actually gamers or dedicated to studying games, they were like film studies or lit folks dallying, so basic stuff like this fell through the cracks a LOT)

BTW it is EXTREMELY common for academic papers to declare Lara Croft the first playable female game character (a very easy fact to debunk). As a grad student I wrote a paper that traced every appearance of this "fact" to a single paper, which is why you don't only engage with academic texts!!

And then suddenly it's lunch time and that's all I've managed to do in a morning!!! Just because something has a source on Wikipedia DOES NOT MEAN that source is legitimate. If I corrected every dead citation I came across on wikipedia, it would be my full time job.

the nature of my work is that sometimes I'll check a citation on wikipedia for a basic history fact, only to find that "source" is actually citing another source, so I'll check on THAT only to find, after reading 90 pages, that the basic fact is absolutely not in there. Thus there is NO SOURCE.

I think one of the things that bothers me the most about the way Polymarket presents itself to the world is that it's adopted the language of journalism to make itself sound more legitimate. Like look at this post from yesterday morning incorrectly "projecting" the winner.
