First thought was that the rendering times were too long or the software didn't support it, but the FF7 FMV team was probably using Alias PowerAnimator, which had mesh skinning for 3-4 bones per vertex! The final cutscenes with Red XIII running are skinned (unless they did a good job of hiding it!)
