A graph with the title "Sheep to people ratio in Aotearoa/NZ: Data from 1935–2024 by 5-year averages" on a light blue background with a pale green area resembling land. The x-axis shows years by 5-year increments and the y-axis shows the rounded number of sheep per people. Between 1935 and 1980, the ratio is about 20:1, but then rapidly dropping to about 5:1 in the 2020s. The top corner shows an outline of Aotearoa. Caption reads: "Packages: {tidyverse, marquee, patchwork, rnaturalearth, rvest}; Data: StatsNZ & Statista via TidyTuesday & Wikipedia; Visualization: C. BΓΆrstell"

Day 4: my data #30DayMapChallenge

Today I learned that #rstats πŸ“¦ `tidygeocoder` is super useful for pulling lat/long coordinates and that plotting a world map that centres the pacific is quite annoying. Shout out to @freerangestats.info for useful blog posts.

Today I wanted to work out how to plot regional population on a map of NZ.

Turns out the `spData` package has nz data (and other interesting spatial data that might be useful to beginner map makers).

Map of Te Araroa Trail showing the 3000 km walking route through New Zealand from Cape Reinga in the north to Bluff in the south. The trail is depicted as a colored line indicating elevation changes, with deep blue representing sea level areas, transitioning through purple and pink to yellow at higher elevations up to 2000m. Two key landmarks are labeled: Tongariro Alpine Crossing at Red Crater (1861m) in the North Island, and Two Thumb Track at Stag Saddle (1934m) in the South Island. The trail winds along both islands, showing significant elevation variations throughout the journey.

This map shows New Zealand's Great Walks and their 2023-2024 visitor numbers using colored dots of different sizes.
Key Finding:
The Abel Tasman Coast Track (large red dot in northern South Island, around 41Β°S) had the most visitors with over 14,000 people.
Other Notable Tracks:

Routeburn and Kepler tracks (medium red dots in southwestern Fiordland region, around 42-45Β°S) each had 6,000-7,000 visitors
Several smaller tracks with lower visitor numbers are scattered across both islands

Legend:

Dot colors indicate track type: red = one way, cyan = loop track, dark teal = river journey
Dot sizes show visitor levels: small = 0-5k, medium = 5-10k, large = >10k

Note: Visitor data for Hump Ridge and Lake Waikaremoana tracks were unavailable.
