it’s incredibly concerning that doomsday believing evangelicals have won control of the government

It was great!
Even 7am podcast this morning referred to it only as a “classical Chinese dance group banned in China.”
If you’re confused by who might be behind the PM’s bomb threat, the Chinese government hates the Falun Gong mob behind the Shen Yun extravaganzas, but Falun Gong are hardly a benevolent bunch - v. credibly accused of being an exploitative cult www.ltaspod.com/53
I thought this stuff was improving, argh
Oh yeah I understand that (though it still doesn’t make a lot of sense!), I thought you meant Albo had some kind of involvement with the dance troupe.
What’s his involvement with Shen Yun, do you know? I’m not across this.
“Instead of sidelining the issue of democracy, as some political pollsters suggest, those concerned about the issue should foreground it — working hard to illustrate how Trump’s behaviors threaten core freedoms people cherish.”

It makes no sense at all, will be interesting to hear what the investigation makes of it
The bomb threat was made to Shen Yun? What on earth? Also I hate that the cult accusations against Falun Gong are framed as only coming from the CCP without mention of former members / survivors. The ABC has itself investigated the group.

Or maybe, making sure people can afford housing, health care and basic necessities, are able to form community by not having to constantly move and are ensured financial security in one of the richest countries on earth might do it? How’s leaning right going for UK Labour? 🫠🫠🫠
“Our governments are actively selling us out to companies that do not have our best interests in mind, based on promises of increased productivity and a flood of investment that are based far more on hype than reality.”

Alan Kohler talking about the urgent need to tackle inequality. The major parties talk about it a lot but don't seem to want to do what it'll take:
💸 changes to CGT discount on investment properties
💸 start taxing wealth more than work
💸 get a fair return for our natural resources
Federal police raided Dissent Bar in Canberra and stripped anti-fascist posters off the walls under Labor's brand new hate speech laws. Not a Nazi compound. A local café with political art. This is what biased laws look like in practice. 🧵
For those of you wanting more context for the Shadow Treasurer that Angus Taylor has chosen, his ideology & connections to foreign influence operations’ local offices, I gathered it here before the election. Note his behaviour as Human Rights Commissioner.

“When people cannot find affordable housing, and when the government’s response is to build housing bureaucracies rather than houses, the far right’s narrative—that immigration is the cause—acquires a surface plausibility that reasoned argument struggles to overcome.”
BREAKING: High Court ruling today in AA v Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle opens avenues for justice in child sexual abuse cases.
The decision means survivors can seek compensation from the institutions that failed them via a 'non-delegable duty of care'.
😮😮😮 amazing!
"Dhakal maintained regular communication w/...the Unification Church [AKA "Moonies" cult] & sought political support through alliances w/ major parties, particularly the CPN-UML. A leaked letter dated Nov. 30, 2017 cited in the investigation also alleged Dhakal demanded money from church officials."
We knew from the moment we heard it that “social cohesion” would be one of those Orwellian terms which would be used to cover all manner of state sanctioned abuse and deprivation of civic freedoms.
It fuels the very unrest it pretends to seek to quell.
Reading through the papers and checking social media this morning and it could be easily said we’ve never been less socially cohesive.
This is the ur-grift: it’s not the get-rich-quick scheme that makes you rich, it’s teaching other people how to sell it to someone else.
“People are actually basically giving the majority of what they have, even like, missing their rent just to be able to give to the church” – former ‘accountant’ member of Shincheonji

I don’t have much hope this investigation will result in meaningful action under current laws. Call me old fashioned but I think antisocial groups that mislead, coerce and exploit people should be banned from operating charities #cults
