Point being, miss me with the absurd claim of “not violent.” At a certain point it’s utterly irrelevant what the Spanish Crown has asserted about rights when you’re dying in the silver mines by the thousands.
To add the cherry on top- all this was said by one attacking US history knowledge. 🙄
Oh and racial bigotry, and part of a wider and deliberate effort among post-independence LatAm countries to “forget” they too were once slave societies reliant on the importation of enslaved people from Africa.
It’s pure myth to think it was limited to Brazil, Caribbean, and U.S. in the Americas.
The danger of two inter-related factors!
1) The classic problem of a limited knowledge base. In this case, reading a handful of legal documents from the colonial and independence era and conflating that with lived reality.
2) Nationalism; but that’s self-explanatory. Myth strikes at all of us.
I just read a series of historical hot-takes so uninformed (yet so blisteringly self-confident) that I must go to sleep now. 😭
If you must know- Assertions that Mexico has *never* witnessed mistreatment of indigenous peoples, and a defense of Spanish colonialism as “non-violent.”
