As much as I wish I had news reports, I got my information from the ICE_watch group on reddit. The only story confirmed by major news outlets is this one from Buffalo, so we know the reports are accurate at least

You're absolutely right. The trick is that the voters they used to be able to reliably count on are leaving their camp, as seen in the many special elections Dems have over performed in this past year.
This administration/regime seems to be utterly oblivious to the Streisand Effect and I love it
There's no real way to know, but gerrymandering is always a balance. Right now, with the massive loss of support from reliably red districts, I think more red led gerrymandering could push the lines too far and end up flipping gerrymandered districts blue.
