County officials are hoping to negotiate a lower price for their preferred site, which is privately-owned but ideally located just a few minutes’ walk from the existing library.
This line from @caseyjohnston.bsky.social newsletter feels depressingly true: "now that Gen Z is mostly adults, it seems like laptops in the classroom were a massive mistake, and all we did was feed $30 billion to tech companies (plus a generation of captive users) who eminently do not need it."
BREAKING: After months of discussion, developers have withdrawn applications for the proposed data center near Apex.
Pe’sla, a sacred site in the Black Hills, translates to “the heart of all that is.” The site is central in Lakota creation stories. Last week, the Forest Service approved a permit for exploratory drilling for a graphite mine.
Disappointing to say the least. This area deserves better. Feels like a big missed opportunity.

Two other Democratic lawmakers in North Carolina who sided with the GOP to overturn vetoes of major bills (e.g. anti-trans legislation) are also losing in their primaries so far to progressive challengers.
This could be a major night in NC.
RESULT: Over & over, Democratic lawmaker Shelly Willingham helped the North Carolina GOP override the vetoes of Governor Stein & Cooper.
He lost just now to a progressive challenger, 56% to 44%.

It's so distressing that the grassroots energy in the district right now is deeply anti data center and one of the biggest villains in the "stealing all my shit industry" might pull off buying the race.

Jobs & Democracy PAC (AI, with support from Anthropic, maker of Claude): $1.6 million
Article ONE PAC (Jeffries-linked, possible AIPAC pass-through): $600,000
It's difficult to explain all the outside spending developments in the bellwether NC-04 race, but I'll try to break it all down.
As of last Friday, the numbers were:
Nida Allam (challenger): $1.1 million
Valerie Foushee (incumbent): $100,000
Today:
Allam: $1.58 million
Foushee: $2.27 million
Getting extreme 2022 flashbacks with the about of outside and bad faith money, including from those now with deep ties to AI, being dumped on Valerie Foushee’s campaign in order to stop Nida Allam. Pretty disgusting stuff!
Bleak. Every single part of this story is gross and depressing.
The “AI safety” super PAC largely backed by Anthropic is now up to nearly $700k (!) in North Carolina 4, backing Valerie Foushee over@nidaallam.bsky.social.
Foushee is on the Dems AI task force. In 2022, she got $1m in backing from SBF AND $2M+ from AIPAC.
