Unexpected climate feedback links Antarctic ice sheet with reduced carbon uptake A study in Nature Geoscience reveals that changes in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) closely tracked marine algae growth in the Southern Ocean over previous glacial cycles, but not in the way scientists expected.

New findings indicate that as the West Antarctic Ice Sheet shrinks, less bioavailable iron from icebergs may limit algae growth and reduce carbon uptake in the Southern Ocean. doi.org/hbnfpw

Fertilisation of the ocean with mineral dust promotes algal blooms that capture carbon, but when the same thing happens in Greenland, it reduces albedo leading to accelerating melting.

A new study analysed dust collected from the Greenland Ice sheet and found minerals essential to algal growth.
