Our @science.org paper is officially out, and we're featured on the COVER! πππ§ͺ
My postdoc Justin Kader led this deep dive into VV 340a, revealing how a precessing jet from a supermassive black hole drives massive gas outflows.
Itβs been a journey; go Team! π₯Ήπ₯

Living the metascience dream (or nightmare) with AI for science
What happens when we go from replication crisis to robustness extremes?
AI makes continuous reproducibility and robustness testing trivial. What happens to science under new levels of scrutiny and stress-testing by default?
Some thoughts on how this could play out, informed by watching open science play out over the last decade.

Can you figure out which is which?

We need to get serious about tackling corruption through political donations
The government's reforms are welcome but they won't end political corruption
Political donations = corruption.
Super-rich buy influence and power.
Parties reward them - organize threatening issues off the agenda, provide tax perks to the rich, crony contracts, VIP lanes, honours.
Can't have democracy without banning political donations.

How do you get your already obesely inflated Defense Budget to be even higher?
You create national security risk via having complete idiots in charge of it all.
Consequences?
They'll all just make more money.

Everyone has the muscle - it protects our hearing from loud sounds. (think: ear sphincter)
However, like crossing other sensory inputs, this reflex can be falsely triggered.
My left ear muscle beats to the percussion I make w/ my left hand, after a short entrainment period.

Can you hear this guy drumming the table?
(admittedly a stretched segue..)
Somewhere between tinnitus and synesthesia, lies "Tensor Tympani Syndrome" (aka Middle Ear Myoclonus) - the involuntary muscle contractions in the middle ear that sound like a finger on a drum.

He didn't add that it's a global, human phenomenon.
Nor the important next band (or 2) up from there, which are also at odds w/comprehension in our modern, info-rich environments.
It adds up to the large majority, which has big consequences down-stream for democracy & capitalism.

Corollary claim:
There is a natural background sound on our planet (like Schumann #resonance) that due to things like bone density & ear cavity dimensions, is not heard by all humans in the same manner.
So, like many "disorders," is more about our ignorance of the world than individual "deficits."

That makes sense.
2 wildcards:
If the body naturally eliminates the sound via filtering (or like color saturation), then people w/tinnitus would be able to hear at least some versions of the test. (false pos)
Given specific frequencies, it could provoke sensing some Hz better. (false negs)

That sucks. From what I gather, that is probably the worst kind.
I've always had it & apparently my mind blocks it out unless I specifically pay attention to it, like breathing, sort of.
That's kind of why I phrased it that way - do I "really" have it if I'm not usually aware of it?

The strain on scientific publishing
Abstract. Scientists are increasingly overwhelmed by the volume of articles being published. The total number of articles indexed in Scopus and Web of Science has grown exponentially in recent years; ...
In the strain on scientific publishing, we showed that total publications have grown out of control. A huge part of that was guest edited special issues by groups like #MDPI and #Frontiers.
This ongoing practice is the largest delegation of editorial power academia has ever seen.

Didn't read this one yet, but it seems kind of already answered.
We know it's not already. It can help a little, in controlled ways, but it does horribly at it in general.
If anything comes of it, it will be by sheer statistical luck, or due to prompts & human input.
