The cost of AI, both in terms of water/energy and in terms of people harmed, is incredibly high, and the benefits are marginal at best.

I can’t understand how anyone can weigh a building full of murdered girls against the inconvenience of… thinking.

And when I say “its errors are deadly” I’m not being hyperbolic.

People have been coerced into suicide.

People in medical crisis have been advised not to go to the ER.

The US military used AI to identify targets in Iran, resulting in the bombing of a school.

The thing about using generative AI is that the worst case scenario is that it hallucinates, fracturing the entire concept of knowledge/reality. It was never designed to generate truth, and its errors are deadly.

Best case scenario is ::checks notes:: we don’t have to write our own emails.

Original (left) and corrected (right) Fig. 4a in the paper https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-026-10305-0 showing the chemical structures of amino acids (only the right one) the left figure is just an embarrassment

I wonder... 🤔🤔🧪 #chemsky

a) what program did the authors use to make the original (left) figure in the paper? Wild guess, ChatGPT

b) how such high school science level of disgrace pass peer review in @nature.com?

Note this was Fig.4.a NOT in SI

The thing about me being a GenAI skeptic is that I am a third gen early adopter. My machine worker grandpa thought computers were the future and had an Apple IIE. I had two Geocities sites. Was on Facebook when it was still Harvard only. You know how hard you have to try to make me hate new tech???

Haven’t heard a peep out of him since it came out that he earned an obscene amount of money investing in an energy company days before they received a federal contract.

I’m beyond excited to elect the progressive challenger coming for his seat… she’s currently polling ahead of him

Most of them are trying to get away with “i just wanted cost of living to come down” and like… no. That’s bullshit.

They voted that way out of pure bigotry, they can’t make amends without first owning the bigotry, which most of them haven’t done.

Recently saw a perfect explanation for why forgiveness in most of these cases feels so wrong. Most of them are “changing their minds” now because they’ve been hurt (financially).

They aren’t admitting or owning the fact that 18 months ago they made that choice because 👏 of 👏 racism 👏

JFC your source is a podcast…? I skimmed the link looking for references to actual sources and only found more blogs and podcasts. But you’re worried that bluesky is an echo chamber?

…are you competing to be the most unserious academic in history?

He posted it, but by his own admission AI wrote it.

With any discussion in these replies, you/we are effectively discussing AI *with* AI. So maybe don’t put too much effort into understanding 🤷🏼‍♀️

If you don’t understand the difference between an opinion and propaganda, then you’re obviously the one struggling with media literacy.

An opinion that I don’t agree with is that children shouldn’t have gender affirming care.

But that’s not what NYT platforms -they platform articles claiming to “prove” that gender affirming care harms children. That’s actually completely inconsistent with reality, making it a lie, not an opinion.

My mom views my independence at a young age as a strength, a sign of my intelligence and of her having empowered me. But now as an adult she wishes that I relied on her more because when I’m having problems I don’t involve her and she feels excluded.

Dr. Jay Bhattacharya on His Mission to Rebuild Public Trust in the NIH and CDC He discusses "DEI" research, campus funding freezes, ACIP, and the path forward for the nation's public health infrastructure

The @whyshoulditrustyou.bsky.social team asked some tough questions of NIH Director Bhattacharya. It's worth a listen: substack.com/home/post/p-...

I wanted to add some additional context on Bhattacharya's responses. Sorry, long thread.

Alysa Liu telling 60 Minutes “I love struggling, it makes me feel alive” is a legit revolutionary statement from a Bay Area native in a time when copious amounts of time and resources are being put toward convincing us to opt out of experiencing struggle, friction and self-actualization

Lol yes, these are the best meetings! But yeah I had no idea how many hours of my week/month would be spent wondering “why am I in this conference room? Would anyone notice if I left, or just didn’t show up next time?”

I think the question is actually why on earth Dems would *choose* the moderate/mediocre candidate when there are about a dozen prominent progressives on the field.

Moderation hasn’t been a wildly successful strategy in recent years, whereas progressives have been dominating special elections.
