Man I really underestimated how bad itβs gotta feel to get verbally abused through a bullhorn by someone with a Minnesota accent
stock is mega limited bc these are actually really expensive to print! (sob) but it's up on my online store -- jennymott.bigcartel.com and it'll be on sale @oddmartmn.bsky.social for Frozen Flop on 01/18/25!
a chibi-style portrait of erik johnson with his tongue sticking out through a gap in his teeth. the text reads, "erik is missing three teeth"
a chibi-style illustration of erik johnson leaning against a stack of three teeth. a large blue number three is in the background.
each spread is dedicated to a different hockey player and the number of teeth they have lost
the text "hockey players loose their teeth" is surrounded by a red number one with one loose tooth next to it, a yellow number two with two loose teeth next to it, and the blue number three with three loose teeth next to it.
the text, "come let's count them, you and me!" is surrounded by a hockey puck, a green number four with four loose teeth next to it, and a purple number five with five loose teeth next to it.
this is a 5.5x5.5" board book teaching children how to count to five using famous hockey players and their missing teeth!
a hockey puck and four loose teeth framed by a cheerful yellow background. the title is "countin' chiclets" and the subtitle is "learn to count with the N H L"
i finally have a new hockey book!!
COUNTIN' CHICLETS -- Learn to Count with the NHL
add me if you want to! at murder she edited on good reads and story graph
i will still be using the book apps if yβall want to follow along!
thank you, my friends, for sticking with me all year for these monthly book reports! i have really loved the extent to which these little zines have been a means for staying in touch and maintaining or rebuilding connection. but it turns out that six books a month is, like, a tough pace to maintain, actually. so, for 2025, thank you, i love you. i will see you in 2026, but maybe a little differently!
weβll see what i end up doing next year i suppose
stone fruit by lee lai. graphic novel about, gosh, loads of stuff. what can i say except that i am such a weeper! this is so moving and complicated and sad! i had so enjoyed cannon, and iβm happh to report that this is also wonderful! but itβs fun also to compare them. there are so many similarities, but you can also see such clear growth. comics are so good!
let lee lai make anything they want forever
a mirror mended by alix e harrow. snow white retelling published in 2022. thumbs sideways. cute and fun. iβd read the sleeping beauty entry in this series a while back and i do think theyβre pretty good? there IS however a kind of smarminess to the tone that is kind of like if a sci-fi dad (the doctor who and hitchhikerβs guide style of sci-fi dad) was also somehow a tumblr lesbian.
iβm never going to say no to a fairy tale retelling
angelica and the bear prince by trung le nguyen. graphic novel youβve got mail high school a u published in 2025. thumbs up. trungβs art is so beautiful and really expressive. i think this book is fundamentally a much better vehicle than his debut for showing off just how funny he is. That said, he very much does still deliver a lot of the emotions weight and nuance he displayed in the magic fish. so, good all around!
always hits
case histories by kate atkinson. detective novel published in 2004. thumbs sideways. i recently watched a one-off episode of no reservations on an airplane and man oh man was 2004 actually kind of a long time ago, like, culturally. so, i mean, take that for whatever trigger warning you will here. besides that, though, this was a totally effective entry in the detective genre.
this Was good, but i spent the whole time jus trying to figure out Why i had put it on my TBR and came up w nothing
the world we make by n k jemisin. number two in eldritch n y c avatar duology published in 2023. thumbs up. the general consensus on this book seems to be that itβs not as good as the first and that this series is her worst one ??? i d k maybe i am built different (too easy to please, unfamiliar with her other series) but this was really good! if this is the bad one then the good ones much be incredible!
took me 10 months but i have finally finished a series
me as a cow mooing over a book titled book report december 2025
happy new year my friends

canβt believe the yearβs almost over, my god
the essential dykes to watch out for. comic strip collection published in 2008. thumbs up. the twin cities are very cool and fun, actually. everyone i have ever loved should move here, and i really believe that. i think a lot of comic strips try to avoid topical commentary for fear of becoming dated but i think thereβs something to be said iβm favor of strip comic as historical document. although of course many of these jokes do still hit!
i read a lot of comic strip collections as a kid, but the thing i am seeing now is that they are actually very different from comic books, and the transition back was more difficult than iβd anticipated
gifted and talented by olivie blake. succession but thereβs magic? published in 2025. thumbs sideways. i did come around to this eventually but it took some time. i think the succession comparisons are fair but kind of surface level. like, yes, the plot contrivance is basically the same, but the vibes are distinctly different. this was a lot lighter than iβd been expecting, and it was fun in the end! just, i donβt know? young? and maybe i am young no longer.
yet another victim of my own expectations
careless people by sarah wynn williams. memoir about how much facebook sucks published in 2025. thumbs down. girl boss xillenial grind set freaks and their fragile man child bosses are so profoundly damaging to both the vibe and the world. the perspective on this was a little too self congratulatory for how little self reflection there was. and the content was just exactly what youβd expect. good that the details are out but I hated every minute of it.
local fool (me) surprised yet again that the most powerful people in the world are also toxic and petty and stupid in exactly the same way as any toxic manager of a chipotle
cannon by lee lai. graphic novel about boundary setting with your friends published in 2025. thumbs up. listen! asking for help is hard! but comics? comics are good. sometimes i think that the more complicated or nuanced a story, the simpler the form should be, and i think this is a good example. the layouts are absolutely bare bones, but the characters and the situations feel so so whole and real (symbolic magpies aside)
sincerely some of the best writing iβve seen in any medium
heavenly tyrant by xiran jay zhao. number two in communist mecha ya series published in 2024. thumbs up. xiran jay zhao, your brain is so big! truly they are out here making bold narrative choices and my cowardly heart can hardly take the stress of it but i also canβt seem to stop reading. that said, it is amazing to me the lengths to which people will go to avoid going steady (a comics anthology about couples who are in it together) because what do you mean thereβs a third love interest?
whew! that beat isβthat beat is dandy!!
between two fires by christopher buehlman. french catholic black death adventure published in 2012. thumbs up. hell is empty and the devils are here! christianity is a death cult! plague times are the same. really surprised this was published in 2012 and not 2022. very ahead of its time. big found family vibes, very satisfying conclusion, and quite a bit of monster-y horror. plus yβall know i love when the pope is not so secretly a demon. this was a treat!
tag yourself: disgraced knight, drunk priest, child prophet (i wish i was drunk priest but i am actually disgraced knight)
me as a cow reading a book titled book report november 2025
maybe the only skill that matters is perseverance (i am still doing this, somehow)
Happy Halloween! We have fun here.
add me if you want to! at murder she edited on good reads and story graph
happy halloween!
the bewitching by silvia moreno-garcia. new england university haunted by witches. three timelines published in 2025. thumbs up. silvia! sheβs done it again folks! you know i love a secondary narrative as a found object within the primary narrative. you know i love a new england womenβs college with spooky rituals and repressed homosexuality. you know i love a 1990s period piece. she just gets it. whatever she wants to write, i want to read.
god sheβs good
frankenstein by mary shelley. gothic science fiction published in 1818. thumbs up. it head been nearly 20 years since i read this and i had forgotten basically everything exist for that oak tree that gets struck by lightning and the fact that no one actually sings puttinβ on the ritz. i couldβve sworn the creature had a name and that it was adam, but now i think that was a don hale headcannon. (for context, for the few of you i havenβt known all my life, thatβs my 8th grade english teacher)
gotta get ready for the movie (seeing it tonight)
