While generative AI has many claims about its future potential effectiveness, with massive amounts of money being poured into this industry to keep it afloat, the real impacts of this technology are much more significant than is being let on -

Join us to learn about the environmental impacts of AI at the SHIFT Centre for Social Transformation.

With the rise in popularity in Generative Artificial Intelligence over the past few years, it is increasingly important to consider what effects this technology is having on us.

And perhaps not even labour unions–not alone, anyway. The pressure from an authoritarian-leaning government and a coalition of Montreal business associations worked, and it shouldn’t have. The unions gave away their leverage. In a vacuum of bold leadership, it’s up to us to step up.

If transit is as essential a public service as we say it is, then it should therefore be free. We should demand more, and we will. The strike has ended, but the struggle is far from over. If we want a future that is decolonial, abolitionist, and just–we need you.

We stand against the anti-loitering law. We oppose this trend of increased surveillance and police oppression. We can and must do better, and here’s how:

Instead of relying on a new mayor that only got 9% of the population of Montreal’s support, join us in building a people-powered movement. Instead of continuing to react to the impacts of widespread privatization, take the offensive with us through our demands for free, expanded, and accessible public transit, which naturally includes good working conditions for those who keep the buses and metros running.

Instead of settling for the status quo (or worse), organize for something better with us. Instead of being reactive, be proactive. We stand in solidarity with the striking workers, but their demands are not radical, and they do not address the roots–such as capitalism and colonialism–of the issues we face today.

A better world doesn’t just happen, it has to be built. We have to build it–not a business-friendly mayor, not a state-sanctioned militia posing as security officers, not a provincial government bent on defunding public transit, and not a power-hungry car industry.

CJM Statement on STM workers strike: In the last two weeks, 2400 maintenance workers, as well as 4500 bus drivers and metro operators, went on strike to get new collective agreements negotiated with the Société de transport de Montréal (STM). Throughout, we have maintained our position on this issue:

we support the workers’ demands for a halt on subcontracting and privatization, for improved work-life balance, and for measures to attract and retain staff. Subcontracting in particular should concern us, because not only is it an unjust circumvention around union organizing, it means a steep decline in preventative maintenance of transit infrastructure. Subcontracting worsens both work conditions and the daily services on which we rely.

More than ever, though, we must be clear: our solidarity will never extend to the transit police, as their actions are fundamentally at odds with what we see as public safety and security. Policing does not make us safer, and shows a dangerous lack of imagination regarding how we structure our systems and care for each other.

We believe it is possible to be in solidarity with the transit workers as they face the consequences of austerity–consequences which reverberate down to those who use and rely on public transport–while rejecting the segments of its labour force that work to oppress the most vulnerable among us.

Qui bâtissent des économies solidaires répondant aux besoins écologiques et humains. Des solutions démocratiquement déterminées et gouvernées localement, qui centrent le leadership des communautés les plus affectées.

Des solutions qui sont guidées par des principes, tels que: la justice écologique, la transition juste, l'organisation démocratique et la démocratie énergétique. Aussi par le savoir traditionnel autochtone, l’expérience axée sur le terrain et la science d’intérêt public.

La conférence proposée invitera des peuples trop souvent mit de côté par les mouvements comme celui de l’action climatique. Nous discuterons des vraies solutions établies dans le livret Trompés dans la Serre Chaude avec des personnes qui vivent et mettent en action celles-ci.

Pour la plupart des peuples, les solutions sont déjà là, il suffit de leur faire place et laisser prendre racine dans un monde qui alliera tradition ancienne à une co-construction basée sur la sollicitude, l’entraide et la libération de tous les peuples.

Si nous voulons avoir une planète viable et une place pour tous les humains et plus qu’humains, une suite du monde tel que le capitalisme racial colonial l’a modelé est impossible.

Les crises climatiques, de l’inégalité, du racisme systémique et autres n’ont fait que grandir sous la gouvernance d’un mouvement qui quémandent du progrès aux oligarchies dites démocratiques.
