WTF does that mean? Starting today, Federal Student Aid will send borrowers options if they have student loans in default. Once they start involuntary collections, the government can take money to pay back the loan from wages, tax refunds, portions of Social Security checks, and other benefits.

Am I in default? Loans go into default if borrowers don’t make a payment 270 days after their due date (~9 months). The loan also appears on credit reports as being in default.

WTF can I do? 1) Find your loan status through your studentaid.gov account. 2) The Dept. of Ed recommends visiting MyEdDebt.ed.gov to make a payment, enroll in an income-driven repayment plan, or sign up for loan rehabilitation (the last of which you’d have to do through your loan servicer)
