lol!
One thing I've noticed on several trips to Texas is how different Northern Cardinals look. They seem longer, leaner and often redder than their northern counterparts. Sexual selection at work, I would guess. ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ #Cardinals #Texas #birding
๐๐๐ Woohoo, spring is definitely on the way! I spotted my first Red-winged Blackbird scouting territory at Central Park's Harlem Meer this morning. โค๏ธ๐งก๐ค #Blackbird #CentralPark #birding
I took a minute to watch this Wood Duck in Central Park's Pool. He was bossing the male Mallards around, and then a female Mallard came over and gave him hell. He backed down immediately! ๐๐๐ #Ducks #CentralPark #birding
It is a hummingbird. Not the largest, either! There's a Giant Hummingbird in Peru, which we saw. It's fairly dull looking though.
With the wind chill about 11ยฐ in Central Park this morning, my thoughts returned to Christmas in Peru. Here's a Sparkling Violetear we watched near Ollantaytambo. Sparkling Violetear is such a wonderful name, don't you think? ๐๐๐ #Hummingbirds #Ollantaytambo #Peru
Wood Ducks usually pair up by January, but I spotted a solo male on ice by Central Park's Pool. This guy's available and looking for love, ladies! โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ #WoodDuck #CentralPark #birding
Here's the full shot. This gives you a good sense of how small Teals are compared to Mallards!
I spotted a beautiful Green-winged Teal on the snow at the Central Park Pool this morning. Any guess what the background is? (Answer below.) โโโ #Teal #CentralPark #birding

A Great Blue Heron flanked by a trio of Roseate Spoonbills at a pond in Lamar, TX. This part of Texas is suffering severe drought, so species gather together in the few places with freshwater. An alligator lurked nearby! ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ #Herons #Spoonbills #BirdsSeenin2026
This Northern Cardinal came so close to me in Central Park you can see his 'eyelashes'! These are specialized feathers that protect his eyes when he's foraging. ๐๐๐ #Cardinals #CentralPark #birding
A Great Blue Heron standing atop its newly-built nest at the Rockport rookery. Hundreds of herons build their nests here every year! ๐๐ฉถ๐ #Herons #Texas #Birdsseenin2026
Are you in NYC? If so, contact the Wild Bird Fund with the exact location. They'll know what to do.
Brilliant sunshine in Central Park today as NYC emerges from the blizzard. The Northern Cardinals were poofed up and positively luminescent in the morning light! โ๏ธโ๏ธโ๏ธ #Cardinals #CentralPark #birding
We went to an amazing GBH rookery in Rockport. Didn't go to High Island, unfortunately.
And, second, a solitary Canada Goose waiting out the storm on Central Park's Harlem Meer. #Goose #CentralPark ๐จ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฆ
Scenes from the Blizzard of '26. First, a Northern Cardinal braving the elements in Central Park's Loch. 15" of snow at 7 AM and counting! โ๏ธโค๏ธโ๏ธ #Cardinals #CentralPark #birding
Here's the range map of the Crested Caracara. You can see it just trickles into Texas.
Known as the 'Mexican Eagle', the Crested Caracara looks like a hawk, behaves like a vulture, and is actually a falcon. It lives predominantly in Central and South America (see map below) but is found in southern Texas. And we found it! ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ #Caracara #BirdsSeenIn2026
One cool thing we've noticed here in Texas is how many Kestrels there are--they seem to be on every stretch of electric power lines. I captured this one as it took off in pursuit of dinner. ๐๐๐ #Kestrel #Texas #birding
It has been such a thrill to see Whooping Cranes here in Texas. Once down to just 15 individuals, there are nearly 600 here at the Aransas NWR. Hunting and habitat loss nearly rendered the species extinct, but now there's hope! โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ #WhoopingCrane #AransasNWR #BirdsSeenIn2026
A flock of Roseate Spoonbills flying off into the sunset along the Texas coast. We watch this 'flyout' every evening! ๐๐๐ #Spoonbills #Texas #BirdsSeenIn2026
Thanks!
We went to a heron rookery near Rockport at dawn yesterday and were entertained by hundreds of herons building their nests. Here, a male brings a twig for the female to inspect and then place properly on the nest. ๐๐๐ #Herons #rookery #Texas

In Central Park, we see coyotes and raccoons, but birding here in Texas is just a little...different. This huuuge gator was sunbathing right next to a pond we've been visiting. It was no more than 40 feet from where I was standing. Yikes! ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ
