Briefing: Inequality and the Child Poverty Strategy - Equality Trust
The Child Poverty Strategy is a serious attempt to reduce hardship, but believes poverty can be solved without confronting wealth and power.
Other European and advanced economies have been reducing child poverty rates β but the UK has been sharply increasing it for over a decade. The government has answered with a Child Poverty Strategy, but does it understand the real crisis? Read our briefing now: https://ow.ly/lVGT50XZAJW

βUnelected powerβ of ultra-rich is reshaping British politics, report claims
Equality Trust study shows how House of Lords appointments, big donations and media ownership affect political decisions
Last week we published a report showing the super rich are using their wealth to buy huge political influence over the UK through political donations, control of the media, and Lords.
Here's some ways we've been proven right since π§΅

Headline paraphrased from from The Guardian about the ultra-rich influencing British politics through donations, media control, and House of Lords appointments.
Unlike millionaires, we can't just pay for our opinions to be on the front page. But with your help, we're changing the conversation anyway.
Don't let them stop us! If you donate today, we'll double it. That's twice the headlines next year!

We all want to see society get fairer, greener, and give everyone the chance to live a decent life. The richest are making huge amounts of money by getting in the way of those goals.
Extreme wealth is an existential problem. Read more about our new analysis π

A graphic that reads "Trans people exist; billionaires shouldn't." The image uses the trans pride colours of blue and pink.
We see the harm, fear, and confusion for trans people in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling. The EHRC's guidance has made this worse. Equality means standing firmly for the freedom, safety, and autonomy of all people; it means standing against misleading and divisive narratives.

A graphic labelled "the Thames Water cycle" which has a four-part cycle of increase profits, pay dividends and CEO, take on new debt, and demand bill hikes.
Thames Water is in court demanding a Β£3bn bailout loan, paid for by customers. It's the latest rip-off in decades of hiking bills, extracting profits, and dumping sewage. What's the point of a water system β to provide water or to make money for the richest? Nationalise it now!

This massive inequality isn't inevitable. The need for foodbanks has skyrocketed in the the UK β as has the number of billionaires and their wealth.
These things are two sides of the same coin. Trussell do incredible, vital work, but this inequality shouldn't be how our country works.

A graphic reading "Privatised water in a rip off: we pay Β£450m to South West Water...and they pay Β£1.5bn to shareholders." The source is Lucas Amin at Democracy for Sale.
Reporting from @lucasamin.bsky.social at Democracy for Sale has revealed a decade of bill subsidies paid to South West Water with public money β while the privatised SWW dumped sewage in record quantities and paid Β£1.5bn to shareholders.
Enough. Nationalise water companies now!
