RIP “I feel liberated. We can say ‘retard’ and ‘pussy’ without the fear of getting cancelled . . . it’s a new dawn.” - you had a great run as the best quote in the FT from people who really would benefit from reading the FT, there's a new sheriff in town.

You see this chart and you will likely go "Look, this is why we must move to clean energy."
Not so fast. Higher fossil fuel prices make green alternatives more attractive, but they can also make it harder to deploy renewables.

We’re in one of those situations where reporting and analysis of what has happened is really useful. And where “here’s what could happen next” will get a lot of clicks but is fundamentally almost useless.

I’m Vegetarian. But I Eat Deer.
The deer are thriving. Given that hunting and loss of habitat almost drove Britain’s two native species – roe and red – to extinction in the late 18th century, you’d think ecologists and land managers...
"I typically don’t eat meat — partly for ethical and environmental reasons — but I’ll happily tuck into a wild venison burger. That’s because it’s the one meat option which actually aids environmental aims" - the deer-a-tarian @lararhiannon.bsky.social

I'd much rather the UK were able to keep its deer population in control with non-lethal or wilder means (lynx, wolves).
Sadly, that's not the case at the moment -- especially with 3 invasive species on the loose 🦌

El Niño Is Returning With Another Stark Warning
A science-fiction trope is the time traveler who visits the present day with a dire warning about the future only to be tragically ignored. It resonates because it’s so believable. In fact, Earth had ...
Three years ago, El Nino traveled from the future to warn us of the hotter planet to come. We ignored him then. The planet is hotter than ever, and El Nino will soon be back. Will we listen this time?

the us lags the world in cleantech. bar and line chart showing annual energy transition investments. us is in blue bars, slowly rising to about 250 billion dollars in 2025. rest of world, china and the EU/UK are in lines, rising much faster and higher than the US. China is the highest, dropping slightly to 700 billion dollars in 2025.
A year ago, @markgongloff.bsky.social predicted the Trump administration’s assault on climate science and action would help China widen its lead on the US in the energy technologies of the future. He was only partly right...

Most people don’t know this: Heat pumps REDUCE gas consumption even if running 100% on electricity from a gas fired power plant.

Going to reconcile myself to the fact that the “cost of net zero” debate will always be annoying.
Mainly because:
a) net zero isn’t a discrete spending line (e.g., you mainly buy an EV for the car bit);
b) you need a counterfactual (what would it cost if we don’t do net zero?) and that’s hard
