We've Been Here Before
The lesson we didn't learn from Chromebooks
We assumed access was the same as learning with Chromebooks. We’re about to make the same assumption with AI. New post explores what we should have asked then — and what we need to ask now.

AI in education isn’t just a classroom tool.
I vibe coded a dismissal app for my school with @Base44. No calls. No emails. Every kid accounted for at 2:00. Cost: $0.
School leaders are solving real problems with AI.
What are you building for your school?

I asked AI to analyze how I actually use it as a principal. Results: 40% instructional leadership, 30% communication, 15% operations. The real insight? AI handles the thinking work so I have time for the relationship work—and time to go home.

Teaching AI Literacy: A Driver's Ed Approach for K-12
tinyurl.com/mr334dcm
If we’re saying teens under 13 — maybe soon under 16 — aren’t ready for unsupervised social media, we should pause before assuming AI chatbots are different. They demand the same critical judgment and can be just as persuasive or manipulative.

Teaching AI literacy like driver’s ed: K-5 passengers learning about AI. MS gradual practice (6th observe, 7th controlled, 8th structured). HS earns licenses (9th-10th supervised, 11th restricted independence, 12th full). Goal: sound judgment by graduation.

Just read AI with Intension, Tony Frontier. I agree, we need to teach students how to learn, not just content.
AI will either build capacity or replace it.
1. Purpose before technology
2. “Understanding cannot be ‘given’ by AI—it must be ‘taken’ by learners”

We need someone to step up and lead the way. Too many of those in power now are too comfortable. Congress this means you! Hard to find anyone who would could win a Profiles in Courage award.

Following up on Brookings AI report: formative assessment paradox.
We use AI for daily writing feedback. If students get 100 hrs of AI feedback vs 5 hrs human feedback, which shapes their thinking? Are we building metacognition or dependence?
Need systems to tell the difference. tinyurl.com/y5puhr3m

A new direction for students in an AI world: Prosper, prepare, protect | Brookings
This report explores the potential risks generative AI poses to students and outlines what we can do now to minimize them.
Brookings’ AI premortem: AI will enrich or diminish learning based on conditions we create.
My focus: preserve metacognition, valuable screen time, build capacity not dependence.
Students already use AI. We need thoughtful implementation.

Some teachers loved the AI reflection. Some felt interrogated by it. One explicitly told it to stop. Next I was asked for the prompt so they could adapt it .When users move from evaluating a tool to imagining their own version? That's when real learning happened.https://aida-ai-framwork.blogspot.com/

AIDA - The AI Thinking Framework
We’re asking teachers to integrate AI into instruction. Most have never experienced it as a learning tool.
I ran an experiment: AI-powered reflection for staff. Same metacognitive practice we expect from students.
The results? Messier - more interesting than I expected.

AI helped quantify patterns in instruction
As a principal, I fed 2 years of classroom observations into AI and the patterns that emerged were eye-opening. Staff nailed being Warm Demander (94%) but cognitive rigor was inconsistent (41%). We know exactly where to focus our PD. AI didn’t replace instructional leadership -it made it sharper.

Built an AI exit slip using ADIA framework—4 questions guide metacognitive reflection (what you learned → example → strategy → gaps). AI scaffolds thinking. Teachers see patterns. Base44. Thinking accelerator, not replacement in formative assessment. @base44.bsky.social

New year, new thinking. AI isn’t just about faster answers—it’s a mirror for metacognition. With AIDA (Assist, Investigate, Dialogue, Apply), students can pause, question, and notice their own thinking. The goal: reflective learners who own their growth.

AI’s potential is huge — but only if teachers are in the driver’s seat.
The AIDA Framework is a guided process to help students learn how to think with AI: Assist, Investigate, Dialogue, Apply.
It’s intentional teaching, not hands-off tech use. rebrand.ly/zngzlde

AI should amplify student thinking, not replace it.
Here’s AIDA in action:
• Assist – clarify vocab
• Investigate – compare viewpoints
• Dialogue – role-play a debate
• Apply – create something new
Which could you try this week?

Learning with AI is like sports: AI can’t take the shot for you. It can train, coach, and prep you—but you still have to play. AIDA helps students use AI without losing ownership of their thinking. That’s real learning.

Teachers know the feedback paradox: students need detailed, timely comments to grow, but grading 150 assignments quickly is nearly impossible. So we tried something different—using AI to amplify (not replace) our voice. #EduSky #AIEdu #EdTech

AI can answer questions fast.
But can students explain why the answer makes sense?
That’s where reflection, dialogue, and ownership matter.
That’s what AIDA is built for:
Assist. Investigate. Dialogue. Apply.

I’ve been thinking about how AI can be used in school as a thinking partner.
I created AIDA Assist, Investigate Dialogue Apply
It’s a way to help students use AI without offloading their thinking
What’s one way you’ve seen students use AI well?
