this is what much of my research is on! how words matter and how this translates into internet rabbit holes. here is a quick whitepaper on it that I did @datasociety.bsky.social

thank you for the outpouring of support!
those of us laid off from Teen Vogue yesterday are now sharing our GoFundMe to help us cover our emergency expenses now that we've lost our incomes, as we get back on our feet.
These phishing texts are so annoying. Someone texted me "had dinner yet? β€οΈ" and I was like "no but here's my social security number and mother's maiden name."
Why do some calls require *letters* of recommendation for *all* applicants? 100s of people apply for these postings.
Save us all some time. Names of references are sufficient to apply for a call. Request full letters only for individuals moving on to second or third-round interviews....
Rather than honoring the intimate role women and people of color play in "living off the land"- their contributions are erased. Full paper here -

Now in it's 16th season, the show claims to represent "real reality" and provide audiences with a glimpse of what it means to be a true Cajun. In a new paper co-authored by Courtlyn Pippert (not only Bluesky), we show how this image favors "dudeology" over accurate representation.
A long time ago, I did ethnographic work inside the Bayous of Louisiana with professional alligator hunters. I stayed with a team of hunters on their houseboat, watched how they did their work, and shot a gun. This was during the height of #SwampPeople - a longstanding show on the History Channel.
Thrilled to have this opportunity to study as a Distinguished Professor at University of TΓΌbingenπ©πͺ this summer. I am struck by the walkability of the town (no car needed for the month!), the inexpensive and extremely fresh produce, and the access to outstanding public resources. Feeling grateful π
The public meltdown happening between the worldβs richest man π and the President of the United States ππ once again begs the age-old question: are men simply too emotional to be in positions of power?
Hey all, here's a post at @ssrc.org about how anti-trans talking points are getting wrapped into Google's AI search results.
AI search not only cites anti-trans disinfo, but sanitizes it, making practices like conversion therapy sound legitimate and safe.
Some sad confirmation from @bcgl.bsky.social while I was at UW last weekβthe National Digital Newspaper Programβwhich builds Chronicling Americaβhas been shut down
Historical newspapers are probably the archival material most used by the general publicβfor genealogy, local historyβitβs such a loss
This makes sense. Many of my colleagues from abroad express fear of traveling to the U.S. right now. Unfortunately, more and more U.S. scholars are no longer able to travel internationally to disseminate our research because our grants have been frozen or cancelled.
Thinking about devastating cuts to NSF: US gov-funded science has been the engine upon which most of the tech wealth was generated. But the oligarchs (currently hoarding much of that $) think itβs their own brilliance & not the accident of standing close to the scientific engine that made them rich.
It's tied to my concept, the IKEA EFFECT OF MISINFORMATION. Business scholars found that people value furniture more when they put it together themselves ("the ikea effect"). My research explains how this tangible do-it-yourself strategy is used to spread harmful ideas www.amazon.com/Propagandist...
More importantly, this call is used by conspiracy theorists and propagandists to further the reach of their ideas. ln this article with @alicetiara.bsky.social and Lauren C. Garcia - we explain how that works. doi.org/10.1080/1369...
It's appealing to encourage parents to "do their own research" regarding their children's safety. But *my research* demonstrates that this strategy can easily lead people down rabbit holes of their own making.

Thank you for highlighting this extrajudicial kidnapping, Francesca.
"he's fine"? Sure, he's not in prison. but we need to be talking about the fact that 1) he was fired (with tenure); 2) he was scrubbed from IU's website; 3) the FBI searched his home
