I disagree with those saying DC juries are ill-informed. Iβve served on 7 petit juries and 1 Grand Jury (2019). Each time the majority of jurors held advanced degrees, some were world-class experts in their field. Without exception - no matter their background- all took the job of juror seriously.
Yup. And the street Union Station is on is Columbus Circle.

Congratulations @wellerstein.bsky.social and his book βThe Most Awful Responsibilityβ for a thoughtful and compelling review by Jonathan W Jordan in the WSJ this weekend! Check out www.wsj.com/arts-culture...
Sadly,in this age of ever-shrinking attention spans, many never learned how to really look at a painting/artwork and see what it saying and feel its impact. They snap a photo like they are scoring points in a video game and quickly move on, never learning, never growing, never truly appreciating.
The illustrated glossary I didnβt know I needed! Love this.
This is a must-read.
Rest in Power sir.
From the label at the Denver Museum of Art where this painting was on loan from The Metropolitan Museum of Art βMarie-Adeline LarchevΓͺque, Pissarro's 56-year-old neighbor in Pontoise, also called "Mother LarchevΓͺque," sits quietly in a contained and meditative pose, showing the wisdom of her age. The painting challenges the expectations of an audience used to portraits of well-to-do sitters-not workers. Pissarro displayed the painting under the generic title Laveuse, Γ©tude (Washerwoman, Study) at the 1882 impressionist exhibition. By not identifying the sitter, he turned the work into the depiction of a type.β
βWasherwoman, Studyβ (1880) by Camille Pissarro. In this quiet portrait I see a woman of strength and perseverance, giving herself a moment peace to restore herself before she tackles her endless duties.
Women of 2026 - take heart, you are strong! We will get through this. Resist! Persist!
I have a small business and decided to rent a Uhaul as needed (avg 5 times/year) and continue to use my paid off 14yo small van (102k miles) rather than buy a bigger van to use for my day-to-day work. Will save me car payments, higher insurance, fuel costs, and be easier for city parking.
Lots of sage advice and truth talk in this article that may be painful for many people to accept - even if it is in their best interest to do so.
Wishing all who celebrate a happy Plough Monday. May the new season bring you and yours hope, growth, and renewal.
Weβre just 353 days into this administration and it doesnβt sound like we need to count down to the end of it. Thanks (not) to everyone who voted for this www.nytimes.com/2026/01/08/u...
Scottish cranachan - a dessert made of a layers of whipped cream mixed with tangy soft cheese alternating with a layer of raspberry and a layer of granola (or toasted oats) mixed with honey.
Have you tested your cranachan recipe in advance of Burns Night? Iβm pleased to report Charlesβ take on the classic Scottish dessert is smashing!
In my opinion, that embalmed Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico looks pretty good for being dead 150+ years, especially when you see a photo of him pre-firing squad. π€ͺ
Anyone else wake up on the last day of the year with an insatiable urge to declutter, tidy, and clean the entire house from top to bottom? So glad to have rid the house of dust bunnies and kipple in time for the new year!
A small jar sits in a table. It holds a small Christmas cactus cutting with two bright red flowers. In the background is a Christmas tree with multicolored lights.
Delighted to discover my little Christmas cactus clipping is blooming in time for the holiday!
Cover of the book The Most Awful Responsibilityβ about Truman and the secret struggle for control of the atomic age. The cover is burgundy with a black and white photo of a very serious looking Truman, seated at a desk, wearing a suit and tie, reading a document.
Absolutely delighted to arrive home from a business trip to discover Alex Wellersteinβs latest book βThe Most Awful Responsibilityβ has arrived at Chez Day! @wellerstein.bsky.social
Love this! A great example of how channeling oneβs anger in to action can be a force for good.
An assortment of caffeine-free teas available during the conference afternoon refreshment break.
How one can tell the afternoon refreshment break at a conference was set up by someone who is not a tea drinker.
This video introduced me to the pioneering abstract expressionist artist Janet Sobel (1893-1968) and gave me an appreciation for her art - stunning!, and MOMA's curation of the "In Solidarity" gallery featuring her work and that of other Ukraine-born artists. www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1Y-...
Beautiful! And cut on the bias to get a better fit and lovely drape. That said, I hope this ensemble spent most of its time on the floor of her bedroom. Reproductions of this would make a lovely holiday gift for the WWII history buff in oneβs life.
2025 is almost over and I spent so much time this year taking my elderly parents to their doctor appointments (and Emergency Dept visits, and Physical/Occupational Therapy appointments), and working full time that I had no time to schedule any Dr appointments for myself. #Exhausted.
Iβm gonna need some Alt Text to understand this message.

A brown gravel path receding into the distance bordered by trees and stone and marble grave markers. It is an allee! The trees on either side have formed an enveloping canopy over the path. Their canopies of yellow leaves turned glowing gold by being struck by the light of a setting sun during the golden hour. The light inside the allee made for a magical feeling despite the wind and cold.
Thankful I could walk the dog this afternoon during the golden hour at Historic Congressional Cemetery in DC and catch the light on the leaves of trees lining this path. So luminous! I stood therein the allee buffeted by wind, surrounded by golden light, warmed by the joy and delight in my heart.
