Just debating Alberta separatism is causing economic damage to our province and to Canada.

This reckless harm is irreversible.

Reverend Jesse Jackson called on each of us to be heralds of change, to be messengers of hope; to step forward and say β€œSend me” wherever we have a chance to make an impact.

How fortunate we were that Jesse Jackson answered that call. What a great debt we owe to him.

Behind the cowboy hats and grievance about equalization lies something far more serious: foreign influence, backed by the Trump government, aimed to use legitimate frustrations as a crowbar to split Canada and hand our oil, water, and minerals to the USA.

Opinion: Alberta needs to lead β€” not leave β€” Canada Alberta doesn't need to leave Canada. Alberta needs to lead Canada; to create jobs, attract investment, and build long-term prosperity.

β€œAlberta separatism would isolate our energy sector, raise borrowing costs, and shrink our markets. Is that our goal? That’s the meaning of the phrase, β€œto cut off your nose to spite your face.”

You know how Albertans perennially moan about the rest of πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦Canada ripping them off?
Well, it turns out they’ve actually been ripping themselves off.
Peter Lougheed’s leaky Heritage Fund, established in 1976, now contains only
$5500 per Albertan, whereas Norway’s equivalent fund has $510,000.

Much like Steve Bannon profited off the 'Build the Wall' scheme, it looks like the architects of the Alberta separatist movement are looking for their own payday. The grift remains the same; only the borders change. Modry certainly has the personality for it. #abpoli #cdnpoli #ABleg

I don't believe Smith's claim for a minute
But just so people understand
Temporary foreign workers pay provincial & federal taxes
Refugees who work (Most try and find work ASAP) pay taxes
Which means they are contributing to Alberta & Canada
I don't hate the newcomers
I hate Smith & the UCP

The majority of newcomers the UCP invited to Alberta pay taxes so they are NOT the reason for the deficit
IMO, poor fiscal management by the UCP is the reason

Good day, #Albertans! Quick reminder: this has always been the UCP planβ€”chip away at universal public healthcare & education, push privatization.

Now they're saying the quiet part loud: Blame Ottawa. Blame Trudeau. Blame immigrants. Anything to avoid owning their cuts & mismanagement. #ableg

On immigration: "I often am asked to speak as an economist. And what we should never lose sight of is that each of us is a moral being. And you, as I, have to decide how we feel about this form of rhetoric."

I have always believed in sharing facts, and then people can make up their own minds. I realize some minds are already decided on issues regardless of any information that is shared, but that should not silence sharing accurate information.

We have people in our community today who are feeling the consequences of the blame game.

The Gov of AB spent $10 million on the Alberta is Calling campaign. In addition, the goverment asked for more immigration to the province to address labour shortages, but we did not plan for all the people moving here from within Canada and internationally. We had leadership suggest AB needs to grow to 10 million people by 2050 and RD was challenged to grow to 1 million (Oct 31,2023).

Fun fact…many businesses in town have accessed workers through the Gov of AB Rural Renewal Stream. This is an Alberta specific program where employers are able to hire international workers. You can google that program to learn more. We have many accessing the temporary foreign worker program, including area farmers who rely every year on this program.

First chart…AB immigration. Net international migration to Alberta totalled 197 in Q3 2025, down 99% from 32,046 in the same quarter a year prior.

Second photo …a letter to PM Trudeau from Premier Smith, requesting immigration levels to AB be increased after learning the federal government was cutting immigration levels.

Third photo… illustrates that AB has enjoyed the highest royalty revenue per capita since Lougheed and Klein years..chart courtesy of Prof Andrew Leach.

It is clear the province is facing a significant budget deficit. That is not a secret. In my opinion though, we need to be honest about facing our ongoing budget problems, rather than laying the blame on people who were urged to come here. Blaming a specific group of people will not address our financial situation.

Regardless of status, immigrants pay federal and provincial taxes just like the rest of us. They may begin their life here as Temporary Foreign Workers, but they are contributors to our local community, many choosing to call Innisfail home. They are our friends and neighbours. They buy homes, open businesses, work in many sectors in town, and make our community better for all by giving back in spades!

AB has been facing workforce challenges for years, but the Alberta is Calling campaign brought Canadians from other provinces here. This migration was not due to job opportunties, rather driven by a pursuit of affordable homes. Of course this population growth would add significant pressures to schools and healthcare. What else could the outcome possibly have been?
