The Los Angeles Press Club is a nonprofit organization with about 1,000 member journalists across Southern California. The information our members produce plays a critical role in a variety of economic sectors that are based in our region. Southern California hosts the epicenter of the global entertainment industry, the busiest seaport in the Western Hemisphere (responsible for 31% of container cargo in the United States), the top U.S. airport for origin and destination passengers, and upcoming global sports events (Olympics, World Cup, Super Bowl). Our region is responsible for advancements in technology, health care, finance, and so much more. These marketplaces, vital to the entire United States economy, cannot function without a free flow of diverse and reliable information produced by independent journalists. Our country and its economy is best served by a variety of perspectives, which often necessitates foreign journalists who depend on visas to do their job. Making it harder for foreign journalists could undermine the resulting foreign direct investment that is based on their work. As a result, we oppose changes to the visa system which would restrict journalists to shorter terms and create burdens for them to stay. As a non-political and non-partisan organization, we also are concerned that shortening visa stay lengths for journalists could risk content-based chilling of their work. The potential for abuse by any subsequent administration, which nobody can predict, endangers the free marketplace of ideas. We urge you to reject the proposed visa changes for journalists.
A proposed federal rule change would force visiting journalists to renew their U.S. visa every 240 days. Given this admin's priorities, @lapressclub.bsky.social submitted a comment on how the change would undermine trade:

Trying to prosecute journalists for doing their job is an obscene waste of taxpayer dollars.
Despite a lousy track record here, our last Los Angeles City Attorney admitted it's NOT "in the interest of justice" to prosecute press.
