Here's a brilliant book for anyone who has an interest in Acorn Computers, The BBC Micro, ARM or technology in the UK around that time. A collection of stories by the people who made it all happen. Whilst I have only quickly skimmed the contents since it arrived today, I know it's a 10 out of 10!

Dumb general question - anyone know what techniques are used for โreasonably high resโ 2d frame by frame character animation? We just used sprite sheets on A Highland Song, but somehow it felt annoying and fussy, though perhaps that was just a tools issue. Lots of massive texture sheets to support decent resolution character anims, most stay loaded all the time, takes up a lot of memory, and requires a bit of annoying book keeping to keep track of. Like, when I think of something like Broken Sword, which includes lots of high res character anims, many bespoke for certain interactionsโฆ could they be using a compressed video format with an alpha channelโฆ? But presumably something like that doesn't work well for random access / seeking back and forth? Is this something that a game-centric video format like bink supports? I'm struggling to think of other good examplesโฆ maybe Ori? Or Cuphead? Presumably one of you fine folks might have worked on a good example I'm forgetting!
Coding / tech art question from a private slack, for wider visibility.
Any adventure game devs want to weigh in? Does everyone use sprite sheets albeit perhaps with decent tools?
If youโre part of any creative groups, unions or other organisations in the uk you should be passing news like this along and spreading the world. News like this gets has the chance to be overlooked but if enough organisations kick up a fuss things can change.

The Tower of Druaga (Arcade)
Courageous Perseus (PC-88)
Dragon Slayer (PC-88)
Hydlide (PC-88)
While we're celebrating Zelda's 40th, I want to give some love to some of the foundational action adventure games that predated it. Hydlide, in particular, deserves more respect outside of Japan for what it did for the genre in '84 (PC88).

TL;DR Unity -> Godot transition: after 13 years in unity, it took me 4-6 weeks of getting adjusted, and now iโll never go back. it has quirks, like other engines. thereโs bugs. but itโs free, basically equally capable, and well reported issues get fixed quicker than in unity (sometimes within hours)
What is it with most films these days needing to have the phrase โyou got thisโ (or a derivative of) in the script somewhere?
Am I the only one who finds this particular phrase rather annoying to the point that my opinion on of a film drops considerably when I hear it??
Finally got around to watching Tron Ares which is visually and audibly stunning!
The story is not as great but passable.
Worth a watch.

Spent my day trying numerous โfixesโ to resolve Android runtime issues (the new 16Kb alignment requirement initially and then the classic class not found) after two Unity version updates and an update to the Google Play Asset Delivery plugin.
Youโd have thought it would โjust workโ but oh no. ๐ฉ
Pretty straightforward effect. Start off with some sinusoidal scaling animations on different axes. There should be a PI/2 phase offset between the animation on the "primary" axis vs. the animation on the other axis (or axes if you're doing a 3D effect).

Please, please find a use for my product, I'm destroying the planet to make it and that would be a shitty thing to do if it's not useful. You're all making me and my friends look bad for the bad things we're doing
such a lovely thing to think about
I have been warning for this for literally ever since AI became a thing. They want to own creativity and bind you with licenses.
Don't get too dependent on AI, this is their endgame.
