Aerial view of five rows of graves being prepared by people and digging equipment, with vehicles on the left side.
Once you see this image as a grim American flag you cannot unsee it.
Who?
βThe people building this technology are simultaneously more excited and more frightened than anyone else on the planet."
In their quest to prevent Iran from developing an advanced weapon, the US and Israel were also deploying one of their own: artificial intelligence.
I LOVED your panel! So relevant to my life as a book critic and journalist.
Incredibly good panel. Alex Hanna of DAIR just talked about βridicule as praxis.β
I will point out that itβs the largest room in the conference, and itβs standing room only. People do not want this.
Iβm here, too! Resisting AI. Thank god.

Report from hour 4 at AWP. I was wandering the street near the hotel while my roommate took a zoom, puffing a preroll, then stopped to get an ice cream. Walked by a local TV news crew, got interviewed.
(1) After each engagement, Parties to the conflict shall, without delay, take all possible measures to search for and collect the shipwrecked, wounded and sick, to protect them against pillage and ill-treatment, to ensure their adequate care, and to search for the dead and prevent their being despoiled. (2) Whenever circumstances permit, the Parties to the conflict shall conclude local arrangements for the removal of the wounded and sick by sea from a besieged or encircled area and for the passage of medical and religious personnel and equipment on their way to that area.
As I've addressed this issue in a few interviews today, here's Article 18 of the Second Geneva Convention which bears on the duties to search for and collect the shipwrecked following engagements at seaβsuch as the sinking of the Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean.
Horrifying. Jesus Lord in heaven.
A billion dollars a day to commit wholesale slaughter, not a single fucking penny for health care. America, 2026.
If you notice yourself turning to ai for solace, go outside and talk to a tree instead
If no tree is available, talk to the earth
If no earth is visible, talk to the sky
If the sky is hidden from your view, kill your jailer
She's so great.
A man asked me last night what publishing needs to do for literary fiction to begin appealing to men again. I said, as nicely as I could, that, with over 2,000 books published every Tuesday, of which many would appeal to men, itβs not a publishing problem, itβs a men problem.
Has anyone else had the built-in recording app in their iPhone just stop recording a phone call for no known reason? It happened to me last night (I was interviewing Lindy West!), and it did announce it was stopping but still: why? what the hell?
Also that Jimmy Carter wrote a book whose title made the case more than three decades ago.
NANCY MACE: What is a woman? Have you learned that lesson?
WALZ: I'm the governor of Minnesota. I'm not here to be a prop for your obsession.

I'll try not to spoil the ending.
This is what I'm thinking!
My Amtrak train is in Delaware now and I keep hoping I'll see Joe Biden.
I don't remember a lot from that time because I was basically bedbound due to the meds I was on. Worst pain of my life.
You're so kind! I'm in NJ now but I agree that a good dental team is crucial.
I had a cracked tooth that led to an infecdtion that presented atypically and so wasn't picked up when I showed up at the ER with pain at a 9 (worse than my unmedicated childbirth). I was misdiagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia and treated for it for a few weeks. Thankfully my dentist looked closer.
(with the usual caveat that there are a few instances of "bitch" I wish were a little less passionate, but whatever.)
I was definitely a bit messed up by this. Considered βhottestβ when I was a chain smoker destroying my lungs and general health. A friend called me βwest village thinβ then. Iβm NJ plump now π€·ββοΈ
When we lived in Boston there was a boil water order that shuttered all Dunkins for two days & people were so batshit furious about it that when they reopened on a Tuesday they were giving away a free coffee per patron all day long. Coming for peopleβs Coolatas is how you get American Revolution II.
