Hattie Carthan was a Brooklyn, New York resident who always had an interest in trees. When she noticed conditions in her neighborhood beginning to deteriorate, Mrs. Carthan began replanting trees there and helped found the Bedford-Stuyvesant Neighborhood Tree Corps and the Green Guerillas.
In Minor Black Figures, Brandon Taylor follows the story of a Black painter who grew up in the South and is trying to find his place in the contemporary Manhattan art scene. This novel is an involving and tender portrait of friendship, creativity, and the connections between them.
