I reward in-class work in teams and projects are team-based. But I also donβt entirely disallow AI (in my programming class). The lesson, I think, is learning how we lead meaningful, connected lives alongside these tools.

I really want to retain these learning communities too and I love meeting students at office hours. I donβt think the answer is avoiding AI entirely (just like it isnβt avoiding our phones entirely). I think the answer is teaching metacognition and self-awareness.
Ahh we havenβt watched this weekβs yet but now Iβm excited! π¬
The level of enthusiasm that @grimalkina.bsky.social has for lowering the barriers to using AI tools via "crafternoons" is truly, truly unmatched.
We have a choice to perpetuate or eliminate gatekeeping as new technology emerge; in this household, we say DOWN WITH GATES π€
Ugh, yeah. Took long enough even for Watson who was blatantly a terrible person.
Yeppppppppppopppop
For a second there I thought kiwi energy was a surprising insight about people from New Zealand
Ah not sure what happened there but hopefully my edit just now fixed it!
~ everything is metacognition ~
Aww thank you Terra! So glad this resonated with you.
This paper started as an exchange here in late 2024 and evolved over the next year into a tidy set of recommendations for labs hoping to build more collaborative coding communities. π
Would love to hear if any of these (really not so "simple") rules resonate with you, and what else you've tried.
Proud to be a Californian and to have signed this letter. π«‘

There are a lot of very disturbing things in this video but perhaps the most disturbing to me is how that man gives the finger
WE get to decide how we use AI. We can resist when it encroaches in spaces where we don't want it. We can welcome it for tasks and thought experiments where we would find it useful.
In the best kind of learning, the learner drives the bus. π And yes, you can do that with AI.
My favorite moment in our new episode is when @grimalkina.bsky.social calls me out on saying "it [the Claude skill] made me do X," and "it made me do Y," when really, it was *me* the whole time.
... and that's exactly the point.

words projected on the front of the USIP building that say βTrump destroyed this Institution, imposing his name on the building, a narcissistic attempt to associate himself with peacemaking.β
New β This was projected on the US Institute of Peace building this evening ahead of the first meeting tomorrow of Trumpβs farcically-named βBoard of Peace.β
Photo taken by person who was over there tonight. Unclear whoβs behind the projection.

This⦠is enticing. They may need to make it an auction!
DUDE. Anyone with a spare $6K-$50K to donate to oceanographic research gets to name a newly-discovered deep-sea creature! Annelids! Slugs! Sea stars! TUBE WORMS!
PS Oooooo potential sea slug namers, I don't think Sluggy McSlugface is taken yet!

BREAKING: The Department of Education has ended its directive that attempted to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in schools nationwide.
This is a victory for academic freedom and education equity.
Just a room of humans trying to figure shit out
Confirmed AI hater but would kill to take this kind of intro to programming class
And I would love to have you in class!
@grimalkina.bsky.social and I have opinions as usual open.spotify.com/episode/07ve...
I canβt take any moa of this bullshit
In lieu of being able to clone me, you can have a longer download from me and from @analog-ashley.bsky.social as we march straight into hell (talking about whether people can learn in the AI era and how we're trying to show up for our communities on this)
