If you go to school, borrow money to better yourself, struggle, and declare bankruptcy…

… student loan debt survives.

But if you’re a cop given a public trust, violate by beating up someone handcuffed, lose and a lawsuit and can’t pay damages?

Bankruptcy makes them go away.

(Lawsuit in the $350,000 example wasn’t abt doing that. But the article pointed out that bankruptcy applies to civil judgments, and few things scream “broken system” more than protecting the assets of violent cops more than poor students.)

I’d add:

Just to recap:

Cop misbehaves so badly a man spends 20 yrs wrongly in jail and jury demands cop pay $10M in damages and fees.

But bc city won’t pay, cop sues and not only pays NONE OF THE SETTLEMENT, but GAINS $350,000 for the hassle of LOSING A LAWSUIT ABT MISCONDUCT.

Amidst all sorts of appeals and other litigation, CITY agrees to pay H $7.75M.

Ok. Fine enough.

But recall the bad cop, D, has an open lawsuit vs the city over indemnification.

To make that go away, city pays D $350,000.

In the end, the bad cop is RICHER THAN BEFORE.
