"Mahmood said housing a family of three in asylum accommodation costs up to Β£158,000 per year."
Given that asylum accommodation is awful, and asylum support is a pittance, HOW?
Is Mahmood lying? Or are the HO terrible negotiators paying 48x the going rate for moldy, overcrowded hostels?
Hi! Immigration lawyer here! Mahmood's view of the Refugee Convention as providing temporary protection just isnβt correct & AFAIK isnβt one anyone has ever adopted.
On the contrary, the Convention is clearly predicated on a long-term need for protection.

Another ICE murder
RIP Emmanuel Damas, a 56-year-old Haitian asylum seeker held at the Florence Correctional Center in Arizona, died Monday at a hospital in Scottsdale. His family says he complained for nearly 2 weeks before collapsing and developing sepsis from a tooth infection.
Get around the table and talk! Raiding pensions is completely unacceptable! Support Northumbria UCU in this fight. If they get away with it here it will happen everywhere
As @ucunorthumbria.bsky.social say in this article - we don't want to be on strike and our door is open to talk to management @northumbriauni.bsky.social. But our members (and any right-thinking people) will never accept pay and pension injustice! www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-e...
*it's also very possible that the pensions dispute is a pretext to get Northumbria out of national collective bargaining in order to facilitate further extraction
Why? Because, this is not really about TPS per se. It's about how the logic of extraction has pervaded HE. The goal is to pay staff as little as you can, even if it hurts research and teaching, and undermines the purpose of the University. 3/3
And it resonates a lot with the current @ucunorthumbria.bsky.social strike. Northumbria claims that they can't afford TPS, but it's not clear that this is true. The union's counter-offer is more likely to get employees to move from TPS to USS - what the uni wants*- but has been rejected.2/3
@ucunorthumbria.bsky.social is on strike, so I went for a midday run, and listened to this great podcast episode from NYPL, about the way in which tech monopolies are extracting wealth from ordinary people, deepening the class divide while threatening democracy:

Denmark has *far* worse outcomes - economic, social and integration - than the UK.
Just a fantasyland for those who want an excuse for their own xenophobia and/or are incapable of doing the hard work of confronting the UK's real problems.

Israel is responsible for two in three journalist killings across the globe in 2024 and 2025. The Israeli military has committed more targeted killings of journalists than any other governmentβs military since CPJ began documentation in 1992.

This is why I'm home to be annoyed that the BBC switched away from Canada v Czechia in hockey in favour of luge relay. I can only assume the High Commission will be registering a formal complaint.
