Palestinian refugee camps of Burj Barajneh and Sabra and Shatila are being evacuated

These are the people who fled the Nakba and their descendants

The same state, Israel, is the cause of both

"Mahmood said housing a family of three in asylum accommodation costs up to Β£158,000 per year."

Given that asylum accommodation is awful, and asylum support is a pittance, HOW?

Is Mahmood lying? Or are the HO terrible negotiators paying 48x the going rate for moldy, overcrowded hostels?

05.03.2026 15:11 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Hi! Immigration lawyer here! Mahmood's view of the Refugee Convention as providing temporary protection just isn’t correct & AFAIK isn’t one anyone has ever adopted.

On the contrary, the Convention is clearly predicated on a long-term need for protection.

Another ICE murder

Get around the table and talk! Raiding pensions is completely unacceptable! Support Northumbria UCU in this fight. If they get away with it here it will happen everywhere

Northumbria University staff announce 10 more days of strikes in pensions row UCU members at Northumbria University have confirmed that they will take another 10 days of strike action, as a dispute over an alleged 'pension grab' continues

As @ucunorthumbria.bsky.social say in this article - we don't want to be on strike and our door is open to talk to management @northumbriauni.bsky.social. But our members (and any right-thinking people) will never accept pay and pension injustice! www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-e...

*it's also very possible that the pensions dispute is a pretext to get Northumbria out of national collective bargaining in order to facilitate further extraction

03.03.2026 14:00 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Why? Because, this is not really about TPS per se. It's about how the logic of extraction has pervaded HE. The goal is to pay staff as little as you can, even if it hurts research and teaching, and undermines the purpose of the University. 3/3

03.03.2026 14:00 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

And it resonates a lot with the current @ucunorthumbria.bsky.social strike. Northumbria claims that they can't afford TPS, but it's not clear that this is true. The union's counter-offer is more likely to get employees to move from TPS to USS - what the uni wants*- but has been rejected.2/3

@ucunorthumbria.bsky.social is on strike, so I went for a midday run, and listened to this great podcast episode from NYPL, about the way in which tech monopolies are extracting wealth from ordinary people, deepening the class divide while threatening democracy:

Refugee status to be temporary as Shabana Mahmood rips up rules on UK asylum Home secretary announces 30-month protection limit, with refugees required to leave if their home countries are later judged safe

Imagine putting in all the time and effort required to be an MP, just so you can give a kicking to people who have survived untold horrors.

A Danish lesson for Labour on how to stop migrants and start winning Like the home secretary, I visited recently to learn how the centre-left is riding high and reclaiming the asylum debate from the populist right

Denmark has *far* worse outcomes - economic, social and integration - than the UK.

Just a fantasyland for those who want an excuse for their own xenophobia and/or are incapable of doing the hard work of confronting the UK's real problems.

Her Mum is the cleaner at that bank

anti-abortion groups don't see abortion as a single-issue - they are simultaneously funding & driving anti-trans, anti-LGBTQI, anti-migrant [...] efforts in the UK and transnationally. it isn't just 'what happens in the US', it's also what they've funded in Uganda, Hungary, Mexico, Poland [...] 1/

Jesse Jackson, civil rights icon, dies aged 84 A fixture in Democratic politics who ran for 1988 presidential nomination, Jackson was once close to Martin Luther King Jr The Rev Jesse Jackson, the civil rights campaigner who was prominent for more than 50 years and who ran strongly for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988, has died. He was 84. β€œOur father was a servant leader β€” not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world,” the Jackson family said in a statement. β€œWe shared him with the world, and in return, the world became part of our extended family.
