The Empire Strikes Back is a Christmas film. I can't really explain it, but it is, with its snowy planet, lessons of patience in a grey and rain-soaked bog (England in winter), its sense of imminence and becoming, and the most awkward family dinner with fascist dad that you're anxious to escape.

The sensation of cringe lives forever. I'll think of something utterly humiliating I did at 16 or 28 or 35 or last week and I'll wince instinctively like the past is coming at me with a hammer.
I want to add my voice to the chorus here and say that Paul Dano is one of the MOST INTERESTING actors working. I will actively search out projects that I know he's in.
