My bad - @stephenjacobsmith.com joined for the elevator hearing at OR legislature.
@councilorkanal.bsky.social here's the recording of the hearing that @senkhanhpham.bsky.social and @amb.fyi held for elevator reform: olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/mediapla...
Chile has rebuilt access to welfare around a municipal βone-stop shopβ. GestiΓ³n Social Local has reached 10 million poor and vulnerable people across 339 municipalities, trained 10,000+ municipal workers, & processed more than 13 million benefit requests since 2019 buff.ly/GI3jGpI #ShareGoodNewsToo
That zine is amazing! Incredible visualization of how much better our planning could be.
Mike, do I recall correctly that you presented at the OR legislature about elevators last year as well?
We need to start illustrating why certain buildings are built the way they are. Unless you're deep in the weeds, it's easy to think that everything is copy+paste because of profit maximization alone. But combine all these forces, and the options get limited very fast.
There are so many forces that shape what's feasible today. Zoning and parking regs are where we've made the most progress, but building codes, fire codes, finance, and insurance all induce certain home types and eliminate others.

WA just passed a first step on this a few days ago: www.theurbanist.org/2026/02/17/w...
I expect it to come up in the OR legislative session next year, would be great for the City to advocate. @andersem.bsky.social is the local expert here.
The Trump administration took your money illegally.
They wonβt give it back.
That didn't sound right to me either

Thank you for your work on this, Councilor! We'd love to get more appealing, accessible flats built everywhere with upzoning + single-stair + small elevator reform. That way more folks can continue living on their street / in their neighborhood, when the detached home no longer suits them.
Curiously, the ESD tax on downtown businesses is never questioned by anti-tax groups...
Action alert with text "ACTION ALERT!" Tell City Council: "We need an Inner Eastside for All!" with link to webpage https://portlandneighborswelcome.org/ie4a-resolution. The alert has bold colored text, the logo for the Inner Eastside for All campaign, and a graphic holding a loudspeaker.
ACTION ALERT: Support an Inner Eastside for All! We need your written testimony to support a resolution that would speed up the re-legalization of building apartments in Portland's high opportunity and amenity-rich Inner Neighborhoods! portlandneighborswelcome.org/ie4a-resolut...
Have we seen any progress on Comm. Brim-Edwards wrapping her head around it?
Yup, there are a lot of decisions worth questioning!
Wow, I had no idea about his grandpa. I bet gramps really would've liked @councilorgreen.bsky.social.
Itβs so funny to me that they treat him as the go-to for business wisdom. Dude has not a single day of real business experience on his resume!
From what I've heard, City administration leadership does not want to make the hard call on staff reductions, so they just haven't done it. Is that true? If that's the case, are they failing to take the action necessary to protect our budget? Or were they making a bigger deal than necessary?
Question for Portland City Council: last budget season, much was made of the shortfall and how staffing reductions would be necessary. Now, some Councilors are saying there's a general budget crisis. But - did those staffing reductions ever happen? Are they adhering to the budget that was adopted?
One of the best things about BlueSky is the lack of slop, both text and image/video. When I dip in to Facebook, Xitter, LinkedIn, it's jarring. That's been the main vector I've considered: plenty of people seem happy to swim in the slop, so I expect segregated human vs synthetic media environments.
you think that's the trajectory we're on?
Let's include this data in Portland's Economic Opportunities Analysis.
It is so unfathomable to me that so many wealthy people have determined that accepting fascism is worth it to get these miniscule tax cuts. Unadultered greed and selfishness.
very aspect of life in this country is designed so that people do not form bonds or relationships with other people, it's wild to watch in action. Never seen divide and conquer applied this rigorously to a domestic population that is not under foreign occupation
yiiikes, "that adds up to 104[%] though" - hard to watch this work session and not feel like administrative staff is just not capable
CA Lee's first order of business needs to be managing to a much higher performance standard, top to bottom.
Why is CFO Biery complaining about misinformation related to the housing funds? It's his job to make sure city's finances are managed transparently, and the city failed to communicate these funds and how PHB has independently committed them.
I hope at least one Councilor will convey to them that is unacceptable.
that is also infuriating! pundits treated as experts. a scourge of our culture.

not a day of business experience across this crew. fitzpatrick is the only one who ever worked *for* a significant business, but it was policy work at Walmart.
