USGS Folks can’t be at #LPSC2025 and someone hung up a shirt with a flower as a memorial of sorts. We’re already feeling the loss of their presence and a bunch of other members of the community who can’t be here for a myriad of reasons.

For us, it's "travel-related expenses" so if they were going to use M&IE or request mileage or something for being so far from their duty station, then they couldn't get that covered.

LPSC without NASA would be interesting. Most of the FFRDCs seem to have some kinds of protections, but it's hard to know what will happen. Fingers crossed things don't get bad for everyone!

As these layoffs roll through, we can defend NASA without lionizing it. I'm not a unique genius. I'm not the best at what I do! I work really hard and so do a lot of other folks at NASA, and we deserve to be treated with respect as workers, not because what we do is uniquely brilliant or important.

Thanks for putting that in words! I keep seeing the "don't fire the people at NASA because they're our best" posts and thinking about the rest of us losing our jobs because I guess we're not good enough? They don't care about performance, they're destroying all of us.

I'm starting to wonder if February is a myth. No future, only January

Does anyone have any recommendations for solo vacations? In the U.S.

I need a vacation, but I haven't taken one in years because I'm worried about going by myself. I used to do it in New Zealand, but that just felt safer.

Any updates on the spelling of seismology this year? Or has that lore been lost from the public consciousness already? 😅
