I wish all of the people spreading doom and gloom about AI's energy consumption put it into perspective. The amount of energy you save by not using GPT/DALLE/etc for a year is utterly dwarfed by the energy you save skipping meat for a week.
(Though AI producers should still pursue efficiency!)
I can't speak for Xerox PARC, but Bell Labs prospered in its heyday in large part because of its unique model: The legislated research arm of a regulated monopoly. As the pieces of that model fell away, especially starting in 1984's consent decree, commercialism started warping the mindset.
