And just like that-- it is March 6th, and I have taught my last proper tutorials of the academic year. No more till September- in many ways the best part of my job. I will miss the ferocious mental and emotional exercise of teaching.

The wild thing about people over 40 is everyone is processing grief most of the time and never mentions it
i'd like to propose a new outlook "status", like a chartreuse colour, that would indicate,
"this person /thinks/ they're caught up on urgent emails, but if they aren't, a gentle ping would actually alleviate their anxiety"
! I have not heard of this and I am going to go read about it!
I dont think even the sanest public ppl on the american left would be able to say this and stand a chance of being elected! Its not like Ilhan Omar or AOC don't know this, surely?
I think if history is any guide, we can expect literally noone to run on a platform of, let's resolve our collective cognitive dissonance.
Ouch
Strong Lori Emerson Other Networks vibes!
That's an interesting question! Im going to guess, Elizabeth, James I, ralegh, cecil and... no idea
Watching trump. He's talking about the ballroom and his beautiful gold curtains straight after his prepared statement about incredible, unbelievable, bombpounding.
Al jazeera just cut away after about 20 seconds of dementia. Which seems reasonable and responsible.
Hey, I wanted to be a journalist!
Ive been looking for this in bookshops for years since Sandra said how good it was!
So maybe -- look at international media for news about your country, local media for news about where you live. Diversify your diet. Because US and UK national media are there to eat you and your civic norms, alive. More or less without exception.
6/6 pompous skeets
I don't know what I'm even driving at here, except that you'd be better off reading Die Welt or Le Monde and watching Al Jazeera and reading your local damn paper, and piecing a world together from that. Infinitely better off, than consuming any one national news source. 5/x
In the UK this goes back to Mandelson managing the news, "fucking" the BBC on Iraq, and further, of course. In the US the roots are different in shape but the same in substance. 4/x
and that we just ... forgot and learned zero lessons, I guess? We didn't go back to local news, we didn't abjure getting news from social media, we didn't change our consumption habits. And everything accelerated from the 2016 cycle -- and Brexit -- to now. 3/x
But as Reform and MAGA bile gets blasted into our feeds by orgs who should know better, it's worth remembering that you can turn off. It's worth remembering that CBS made more money during Trump's first campaign than during any previous, that media execs collectively took responsibility 2/x
One pattern of the past ten years is that legacy media devote themselves to covering actors who would destroy the set of norms that legacy media themselves perpetuate and are a product of. This is not a new observation. 1/x
I wld expect the person to cathect pretty strongly onto showing the scans, because they are likely moved by the aura of the object - which is fine. But it isn't an argument that holds much water in project management. Your suggestions are the right ones I think. Less flashy but more stable.
I straight up say "When you're walking to your next meeting, think about whether you are independently wealthy, and if not, what your threshold for mental stability is, and whether you want to have a middle-class life or not"
Ha! They always say, "well, you got here", and then I sketch out the cost to my families, the insane luck, the insane privilege I had to boost me, the cadre of ppl lifting me up and boosting me -- and I still had three separate mental breakdowns before getting a job.
The performance of compliance that social media demands is ruinously expensive to the psyche. There was a paradisal window around like 2012-15 when you could talk back a bit. For many reasons, that's over, forever.
I tell prospective applicants, "If there is *anything* else you can even *imagine* yourself doing, go and do that". Yes, you are brilliant and hardworking and dedicated, and no, that couldn't matter less.
The heart reels, as Nathan Hensley said. Unlike many good people I know, unlike, say, the Pope, I don't have prayer in my heart, just rage.
Our "partners" don't need to be "defended" when they are the aggressors. These virtue standards are wildly asymmetric.
Yeah -- they are utterly contemptible? This seems straightforward?
Preemptive to what? You should remove that word.
Look at the "SAVE America Act", and mechanised gerrymandering, and recent history, and start preparing yourself to not be at all surprised when the midterms somehow, magically!, don't go the way they should.
Objectively a fucking hilarious response from YT, who is usually careful to downplay how clever he is
Im sure it is environmentally ruinous for me to have daffs. But fresh flowers- ยฃ1 for this bunch - are a kind of real beauty that you witness without making or controlling. What could be better. I love them.
