I found one of these in a cabinet full of old equipment in a former Naval hospital turned VA clinic long ago. I'm sure it still had bits of corneal epithelium stuck to business end.

We read this series as a class in 6th grade and I remember the comic version in Boys Life. I did not realize BBC adapted these books to a television series in 80s as mentioned in other posts. Looks like the episodes are available on YouTube.
