Worth noting that a major contributor to America's authoritarian turn was an *excess* of pure democracy incentivizing the rise of demagoguery.
For example, undermining political party elites in favor of binding primaries in the name of direct democracy was an essential precondition of Trump's rise.
I found that this is wrong. Democracy actually is a powerful motivating force for a critical slice of the population *if they perceive a real threat*.
I call this the "legibility" theory of democratic backsliding: the more legible the threat, the more likely it is to prompt effective pushback.
If they had just said, "We disagree with the Supreme Court's ruling," that's one thing. But to reference a direct call to dictatorship in the same breath is what puts this beyond the pale.
