A merchant of record is when another company is legally resells for you so they handle all the taxes for you. It can make you live easier at the start but a hassle later one.
The alternative is you use a normal subscription management system.
Personally, I recommend my own product billabear.com. It’s open source and has a cloud hosted version.
But there is also ChargeBee that is worth a look.
Or Paddle if you’re wanting a merchant of record.
