Today in 1868, the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified.
In 1896, the Supreme Court cited the 14th Amendment in Plessy v. Ferguson to uphold segregation under the doctrine of “separate but equal.” It would take nearly 60 years for it to be overturned in Brown v. Board of Education.

Enslaved Africans brought their ironwork skills to America. In the 1800s, African artistry began to intertwine with European blacksmithing as free men of color were apprentices to white blacksmiths. This mix of art styles created New Orleans' architecture.

Massachusetts Is Making Communications Free for Incarcerated People The reform would eliminate the exorbitant charges people face to keep in touch with loved ones in jail and prison, removing a heavy financial burden for thousands.

Massachusetts last year made phone calls from prison and jails free.

It also wiped charges for other forms of communication between incarcerated folks & their loved ones.
