Today in 1868, the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified.
In 1896, the Supreme Court cited the 14th Amendment in Plessy v. Ferguson to uphold segregation under the doctrine of βseparate but equal.β It would take nearly 60 years for it to be overturned in Brown v. Board of Education.
Enslaved Africans brought their ironwork skills to America. In the 1800s, African artistry began to intertwine with European blacksmithing as free men of color were apprentices to white blacksmiths. This mix of art styles created New Orleans' architecture.
