#LastFourWatched Last weekend was stuffed with seeing three bangers in the theater
To Double Team’s credit, those JCVD/Tsui Hark movies are a lot of fun. Rodman fits in pretty damn well.
it’s a cool little theater; only one more showing left on the Herzog too: this coming Wednesday evening.
Camas Liberty Theater marquee with Ghost Elephants
about to see Werner Herzog in the only theater showing it in the Portland area
my #lastfourwatched: (RIP Frederick Wiseman)
how very Park-core
Frederick Wiseman - rare case where a 96-year-old filmmaker’s death feels tragic because they had so much more left to do. Uninterrupted streak of curiosity, empathy, wisdom, and quiet anger, ended only by the reality of living in a human body.
you can watch racetrack, and many of wiseman's other movies, on kanopy: www.kanopy.com/en/video/212...
also, personal anecdote: I was lucky to see Titicut Follies with him in attendance about 10 years ago, and his very functional, unromantic approach to filmmaking—straightforward about the follies of verite itself—only verified for me that what he did was magic.
many people will put this so much better than me, but: “inimitable” is a word thrown around a lot lately, but Wiseman was literally that: the whole of documentary filmmaking attempted to imitate him, but no one ever really succeeded, they just took what he did and kept going.
Many people may be discovering Frederick Wiseman’s work today, and there is part of me that is envious they will be seeing something like Titicut Follies—or High School, or Welfare, or Hospital, or anything he’s made—for the 1st time, because it will undoubtedly transform how they see all film.
That's actually a lie—I became a music critic first
I was never good at writing poetry so I became a movie critic
an album important to me when I was 19; came out when I was 19, listened to it constantly with my friends when I housesat for my poetry professor in Evanston and took bong rips in her basement
Thank you to @vinsyn.bsky.social sub label @saturnscore.bsky.social for this beautiful release, and to @willsloanesq.bsky.social for the rec, which as soon as I heard it I knew would very much be something I’d love to
There are a lot of new movies to see in theaters this weekend, but I suggest trying to catch NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE as soon as you can, because it likely won't be in theaters for as long as the others; I reviewed for the @portlandmercury.com
While you all watched "Wuthering Heights" I caught up with some real cinema this weekend:
My weekend recommendation: take your sweetie to a big theater to laugh with a bunch of other sweeties while watching Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie together—here’s my review for the Mercury
Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is the stuff of crazed movie magic. The meta misadventure follows Torontonian best friends Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol in their ongoing quest to get their band, Nirvanna the Band, a show at Toronto venue the Rivoli.
Thanks! And Nope! Not at all. All you really need to know is that they have one goal in life: to get a show at the Rivoli. (But even that they basically introduce in the first two minutes.)
Also Cinemark Cedar Hills for you fancy Beavertonians
Portlanders, you can catch this movie starting tonight at Cinemark Century Eastport (SE 82nd), Regal Bridgeport Village, Fox Tower, Clackamas Town Center, and Regal Cascade up in Vancouver
Opening in theaters today: the funniest movie of the young year, NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE; here's Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie the Dom Sinacola Review, at the @portlandmercury.com
I’m so sick of how stupid he is.
Movie posters, left to right: Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, 4.5 stars rewatch; killer of sheep, heart; Africa Screams; McBain, 3 stars
#lastfourwatched best movie of the young year so far in here
At this point are you purposely ignoring eveyrhing your constituents are screaming at you or are you just stupid?
My god, you suck, Chuck
Good Morning, Portland: It’s a big weekend for local actions against federal agents, beginning today. Don’t be surprised if your neighborhood coffee shop is closed this morning; many Portland businesses are taking part in a nationwide strike and protest going on Friday and Saturday.
I reviewed JayStay’s latest, a subtle little banger care of the always dependable Ric Roman Waugh
