Our member was doing what transit workers do every day, safely moving members of our community, when a vehicle crossed the centerline and struck his bus head-on. In the aftermath, he had the presence of mind to call 911 before being airlifted to a hospital where he remains in critical condition.

"The stakes couldn't be higher,β said Costa. βTransit workers are facing real threats, assaults on the job, underfunded systems, & new technology that could eliminate jobs.
That same Local defeated HB 84, a bill that would have raided dedicated transit funds. Local 1535 in Kenner organized 45 airport shuttle workers into the ATU family after winning voluntary recognition.
Costa highlighted how Louisiana Locals are proving what's possible in the South. Local 1546 in Baton Rouge scored a landmark legislative win last session, passing HB 179, which secured a permanent seat for the ATU on the CATS board.

This weekend, ATU members from across Louisiana gathered in Baton Rouge for the ATU Louisiana Legislative Conference Board (LLCB), and they came ready to fight.

"These meetings happened because the ATU has the strength, the relationships, & the credibility to be heard at the highest levels of government," said Costa. "We've fought for a seat at the table, & we're using it. Your voice is being heard."
