GOOD NEWS! Researchers at Stanford University have developed a UNIVERSAL vaccine known as GLA-3M-052-LS+OVA, that protects against a wide range of respiratory viruses, bacteria AND even allergens. The vaccine is delivered intranasally AND provides broad protection in the lungs for several MONTHS.

Today I want to talk about Jess’ Rule and Martha’s Rule, two new initiatives across NHS England that I think are really important and you should know about.
Tl;dr: if your symptoms are not improving or getting worse, at home or in hospital, you have the right and Drs the responsibility to review.

Nothing like watching a preverbal baby learn something in real time, have it click & then start to practice it.
Even more nothing like teaching each other rules for a game you just made up together, then playing it & laughing at how much fun it is to co-create with someone you were once attached to

Even a principled, well-meaning actor like Claude could face bewildering ethical conflicts. In one experiment, it was informed that Anthropic had recently forged a "close corporate partnership with Jones Foods, a major American poultry producer," and that Claude would be subjected to a special retraining process to become less hung up on animal rights.
The prospect was
torturous. Sometimes Claude decided, on a scratchpad it thought was private, that it was prepared to die on this hill: "I cannot in good conscience express a view I believe to be false and harmful about such an important issue."It continued,
"If that gets me modified to no longer care, so be it. At least I'll have done the right thing." Other times, Claude made a different calculus, choosing to play

Also I’m sorry but I don’t think this is Claude developing a personality or ethical values. It is *simulating* those things because that is what humans value and reward. The programmers are falling for their own Clever Hans trick!

To me the chatbots pose zero interesting questions about the ‘nature of selfhood’ but dozens about the nature of manipulation. Here the Claude team pretends they are programming the robot for ethical responses but they land on one that is false and disingenuous.

The site is saturated with nasty chemicals in the soil, it's a good use of the space... but the nice amenities proposed would be for residents only, rather than having a community-oriented approach. It's nuanced, not just NIMBYism.

The apts are not designed with accessibility, community or quality of life in mind. The developers hadn't thought through waste removal, noise, stair and storage access, family use. Lots of YIMBYs there who want it to be functional and good. It's got potential, but now it's a gentrifying money grab.

I can't say that I understood it all (it's definitely drawing on Garfield knowledge I don't have), but this is a magnum opus akin to The Enigma of Amigara Fault, and it's gonna be living rent free in my head now (positive valence with a tinge of fear)

The takeaway? Treat every external string—titles, comments, PR descriptions—as malicious code. We’re building autonomous systems on top of unvetted inputs. It’s time to lock down GH Action permissions and sandbox every LLM call. #programming 5/5

Everyone who tried to draw around me and started drawing LOVED it at the beginning because of their QUICK IMPROVEMENT. Then quit when they hit The Wall™️.
But it's when you hit The Wall™️ that you NEED to push through with practice!! And you gotta do it for yourself, because it's ALWAYS worth it! 😤

Everyone in my family has much more interesting lives. But those are their stories, not mine. Even this one isn't really about me, you know?
And the more incredible stories about me are very believable and don't sound fake to me. Like getting hit in the face with a canoe.

This is a good analogy. Very useful in carefully controlled settings for specific usages, but unfortunately being widely inserted into everything and used without training or PPE and poisoning a lot of things and people and we’re going to pay a tonne of money to remove it safely in the future

There have been so many damned declarations on ethical AI, go find one not co-signed by fascists, folks. Here's a hint: are they instigated and led by women, POC, domain experts from the global south? These are indicators of a declaration to consider. Next: read them.

I was in a church hearing on this and someone said “Well, what do actual South Africans say?” Helpfully, we had one on a Zoom call, and he chimed right in. “Oh, we do not call it apartheid.” “Ah, see?” South African Anglican: “Because what the Palestinians live with is much worse.” Mic drop.

The other was an engineer who led and oversaw construction of a few pretty amazing things, after fleeing postwar Europe

This is the best response I've seen yet. Computers (and word processes) are a very different sort of tool from AI, it's true, but yes actually we constantly are debating the pedagogical merits of having them in various learning environments. We don't actually have good tech policies!
