Data Centres Threaten UK Climate Targets Big Tech’s plan to build more hyperscale data centres is putting the UK’s climate targets at risk. Developers’ own figures indicate that emissions from just 10 planned UK data centres will release 2.7 million tonnes of CO² each year, wiping out annual CO² savings from the switch to EVs.

It is estimated that more than 100 data centres are planned across the UK, the largest of which would consume more electricity than double all the households in Wales.

Oliver Hayes, our Head of Policy and Campaigns before our big win yesterday with our legal challenge against the UK Government, where they conceded that they’d made “a serious logical error” in their approval of the 90MW data centre at Woodlands Park in Buckinghamshire.

The Government has acknowledged that it made the wrong decision in allowing the data centre to go ahead without binding commitments from the developer on how they would reduce its environmental impact and agreed that the Secretary of State’s decision should be quashed.
