Last week, our colleague Dr. Santiago López Rodríguez co-organized and presented at the international workshop "Victims and Bystanders: the Sephardi Jews and Spain during the Holocaust" at the University of Potsdam. His talk examined Franco, Salazar, and historiographical debates on neutrality.
Professor Tomislav Dulić recently visited Kraków to give a guest lecture in the Erasmus+-funded course “Genocide and Mass Atrocities Under International Law”. A great opportunity to share a historian’s comparative perspective with engaged students!
New book by our colleague!
"Radicalization and Fascism in the Ustaša" by Constantin Iordachi & Goran Miljan examines the Ustaša’s path from interwar terrorism to genocidal rule, using new archival research and a newly translated militant memoir.

Our researcher Tadek Markiewicz recently took part in the British International Studies Association’s 50th Anniversary Conference in Belfast. He presented on “Global Vulnerabilities and Challenges to Orders” and convened two panels: “The Many Faces of Security” and “Cultures of Representation.”
In recent years, several PhD dissertations have explored the Holocaust and its aftermath in Sweden. One standout: "Afterlives" by Victoria Van Orden Martínez (Linköping Univ, 2023).

The semester begins on Monday, but we are already back and ready for the new academic year. Yesterday, we had the pleasure of spending the day with colleagues from the History Department in the beautiful village of Ekeby — an excellent start to the year ahead.
We were honoured to host Dr. Hiroshi Maruyama, founder of Centre for Environmental and Indigenous Policy Studies & Professor Emeritus, Muroran Institute of Technology. Yesterday, Dr. Maruyama shared powerful insights on Indigenous rights, decolonization & the role of research in advancing justice.
Reconciliation after civil war and mass violence takes many forms, and recognizing these everyday practices can help to uncover overlooked pathways for sustaining peace.

I develop the concept of everyday reconciliation—ordinary practices that help repair relationships across the legacies of past violence.
The framework identifies three types:
1️⃣ elite everyday reconciliation
2️⃣ grassroots everyday reconciliation
3️⃣ vertical everyday reconciliation

Yesterday, a few of us attended a fascinating seminar at the Swedish Holocaust Museum, where historian Wendy Lower spoke about her book "The Ravine: A Family, a Photograph, a Holocaust Massacre Revealed."
Great to connect with new and catch up with old colleagues in our field.
At yesterday's department conference we had our own Kate Lonergan present her postdoctoral project titled "From Extraordinary Moments to Everyday Reconciliation". We are looking forward to the research results from this highly relevant and timely project, and to many more presentations like this.
Last Thursday, Kate Lonergan participated in the panel on women’s rights in South Asia at Lund University, which we previously announced. The discussion explored challenges and opportunities across the region, with Kate sharing insights from her research on everyday reconciliation in Sri Lanka.
Last Thursday one of our postdoctoral researchers, Ivo Plsek, had the pleasure of giving a public lecture at the Technical Lyceum Stranice in his home country, the Czech Republic. His talk "Three Stories from Lidice" explored his ongoing research on this profound and tragic chapter of history.

This year's Hugo Valentin Lecture will be given by Professor Alex Hinton of Rutgers University on 24 September. His lecture, titled "Perpetrators: Why do they kill?", will focus on why perpetrators commit their acts of genocidal violence. Follow us for more information!
