open.substack.com/pub/towardsd... I've been meaning to write about Mexico and its inspiring president, Claudia Sheinbaum, for some time. With President Trump sounding more belligerent by the day now seems a good time.
Audacious: "showing a willingness to take surprisingly bold risks." I keep seeing that word in news reports in relation to the US's illegal invasion of Venezuela and the kidnapping of its president. What's wrong with the word criminal? Or gangsterish?
Don't worry, he's reading Famous Five to his kids and David Cohen's hatchet job on Jacinda over the holidays. (That's it) Sure to find the inspiration in there for fixing our hospitals. Five steal from health for private wealth?
On a not directly related note, the majority of New Zealanders also want to the government to build state houses at scale. The donor coalition are out of touch with the silent majority. www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO25...
In Aotearoa we're told we have to make do with cut price ferries and a cut price Dunedin hospital. Meanwhile, Italy with a debt to GDP ratio three times as high as us can build a truly transformative hospital like this. www.dezeen.com/2025/12/17/m...

When a print journalist quotes a politician - or anyone else - straight from a press release without mentioning where the quote came from that's an empty cup. More often than not the politician not only never said it, they didn't write it. A former print journalist probably did.
I usually encounter them on a separated bike path coming towards me. They're blinding.
Bicycle lights too. And more often than not they're far too high and pulsing in a seizure inducing manner.
3/3 He was one of the best former PMs we've ever had. In 2013 I produced this l interview with him, I was impressed. (Chatting to him pre-IV he praised a documentary that told the history of US intererece int the ME. (It was by Pilger but he didn't mention that.) www.rnz.co.nz/national/pro...
2/3 So it's only right that we don't whitewash the very real negative impact on the most vulnerable - often Maori - during his leadership.
He was the father of the mother of all budgets and the Employment Contracts Act.
1/3Jim Bolger is, as is to be expected, coming in for an avalanche of praise. His biggest positive contribution to Aotearoa was undoubtedly his championing of the Treaty of Waitangi and the need for Pakeha New Zealand to learn and understand its history.
Just so ignorant. Trying to make a distinction between the UN definition - set in the Genocide Convention- and common usage. The word and its definition exist thanks to the convention. An arrogant fool.
Ignorant of the voting system. No splitting of the vote occurs under STV. You were voted in on a popular mandate. Sure it would have nice to have a higher turnout but that would almost certainly have benefited you.
Hosking and his wife, sorry forget her name, were obsessed with Meghan Markle. It felt personal. Like they were affronted by this black woman becoming a princess. Same thing at work here I suspect.
This feels big. How did @livingwageaotearoa.bsky.social apply pressure?
Do you really think Labour would have stopped it? Or are you saying he keeps both National and Labour in power?
Some quotes from New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon:
β’ βThe world doesnβt owe you a livingβ
β’ βI'm wealthy, I'm β you know β sorted.β
β’ βjust make a marmite sandwichβ
β’ βI donβt care.β (said multiple times since becoming PM)
Guy is a stone cold psycho.
RNZ does regularly run pieces from the Conversation. Possibly the best way to get an op ed from one of the 20 economists is for one of academics in the group to write one. (Bertram or St John would be great.)
A public service announcement about why you shouldnβt defame a lawyer
Cyclist 1, fascists 0
I have approximately zero following on this app, sharing in the hopes it can get in front of the right person. A man I went to college withβs wife was kidnapped by ICE at a green card hearing, and heβs trying to find a reporter who will speak to him about the situation
Peters says New Zealand's partners are divided on the issue. Other than the US which of our partners haven't either recognised Palestine or said they will? Do we call Germany a partner?
Are the other 20% because of younger men, like Obama and Blair, who are hungry for power and significance?
Does any sovereign country not have a bespoke legal system? Isn't that pretty much the definition of sovereignty?
Does any sovereign country not have a bespoke legal system? Isn't that close to a definition of sovereignty ?
The type of friend that when he sees one of his friends kicking another "friend" to death says: "I'll give a gold coin donation towards your funeral."
We have moral amoebas for leaders.
We all have a "right of return" denied to Palestinians ethnically-cleansed in 1948 and beyond. So If I figure I have no choice really but to say not in my name.
