Pseudo Effects: How Method Biases Can Produce Spurious Findings About Close Relationships - Samantha Joel, John K. Sakaluk, James J. Kim, Devinder Khera, Helena Yuchen Qin, Sarah C. E. Stanton, 2025 Research on interpersonal relationships frequently relies on accurate self-reporting across various relationship facets (e.g., conflict, trust, appreciation). Y...

In a new paper, my colleagues and I set out to demonstrate how method biases can create spurious findings in relationship science, by using a seemingly meaningless scale (e.g., "My relationship has very good Saturn") to predict relationship outcomes. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

How can we regulate empathy wisely to maintain our well-being while providing support to the target of empathy? I tackle this question in my dissertation "Wise Empathy and Well-being", which is now published: www.proquest.com/docview/3128....

I am so glad to see this, Linda! I have had an intuition just like your finding in my backlog of research ideas for YEARS, and I am thrilled to cross it out with a paper that appears to support it in such interesting and expansive ways. Can't wait to dig in. What herculean effort, tooβ€”big congrats!

Leaving is also perfectly reasonable! I don’t think anyone owes the field to try.

I decided to stay in part b/c on my optimistic days, I believe our field grows & matures from these challenges, & that there's a healthy version of this process. I also believe that I can constructively contribute. But some days I feel more pessimistic. So far, most days are optimistic days. 2/2

I did know when I was in training, and it was challenging. Field leaders seemed to disagree on what is real, what counts as good science, and who gets the decide. Add those disagreements on top of all the uncertainties and instabilities that typically accompany the training...it was a lot. 1/2
